Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8942 — Tzedakah
Volume 23 · Letter 269 · To: membres de l’association de bienfaisance
By the grace of Hashem, Sunday
of Parshas* Mishpatim* 5725,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the members of the benevolent association
"Those Who Keep the Shabbos*," in the city
of Brooklyn, may Hashem grant you long life,
I greet you and bless you,
I learned with pleasure that the annual meeting organized for the benefit of your benevolent association was to take place (note 1: See Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 6, p. 339.). May Hashem grant that it be fruitful in each of its aspects. As you know (note 2: See, regarding this, letter no. 9027.), the order of our Torah* is an integral part of it and it also delivers a teaching. Now, the Parshah* enunciating the laws, that of Mishpatim*, is found in proximity (note 3: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Commentary of Rashi* on the Parshah* of this day. See also the Mechilta*, at that reference, and the Yerushalmi*, Tractate* Makkos*, chapter 2, paragraph 6.") to the Parshah* treating of the altar, and from this one deduces that the Sanhedrin* (note 4: Which renders judgment and establishes the Law.) must be placed beside the Temple* (note 5: In which the altar is found.).
This teaches us that in the Mitzvos* governing the relations between men, which are the near totality of the Precepts appearing in Parshas* Mishpatim*, it is necessary to be close to holiness and to the Temple*, to be founded on both. Such is also the thread running through the Ten Commandments, which begin with: "I am Hashem your Elokim*" and conclude with: "You shall not covet." It is only on this condition that the relations between men are perfect. And, the same is true in the opposite sense: "What you detest, do not do to your fellow. This is the entire Torah*. The rest is only commentary. Go study it" (note 6: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate* Shabbos* 31a, according to the second interpretation enunciated by Rashi*, at that reference. See also chapter 32 of the Tanya*.").
May Hashem grant that in the good deeds you accomplish, it be evident that they are based on: "I am Hashem your Elokim*," in the singular, that of each Jewish man and each Jewish woman. From this point of view, all are indeed equivalent and have a single Father. A true love and brotherhood reign among them (note 7: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Chapter 32 of the Tanya*."). It is in this way that the good deeds are the most complete, the most beautiful, as well as the sentiment (note 8: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "With benevolence and joy, in the words of the Rambam*, in his Laws of Gifts to the Poor, chapter 10, paragraph 4, with enthusiasm, moreover, according to the clarification brought by the Tur* and Shulchan Aruch*, Yoreh Deah*, chapter 249, paragraph 3.") of compassion that must accompany them.
The recompense of all who devote themselves to good deeds is explained and specified by various texts of our Torah*, the Torah* of kindness, having been given by the merciful and magnanimous Hashem, Who commanded us to follow His ways. And, Tzedakah*, precisely, is "the Mitzvah* of Hashem," what Hashem Himself carries out and accomplishes permanently (note 9: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Igeres HaKodesh*, chapter 17, Tov*, good."). With my blessing of success in your sacred mission,
M. Schneerson,
You will find enclosed my participation, without making a vow, in your benevolent fund.
