By the grace of Hashem,

Eve of 15 Shevat* 5725,

To the dear children,

I greet you and bless you,

I received your drawings with joy (note 1: See Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 6, p. 310.), as well as the letter of your teacher and kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Rochel* Zamir, may Hashem grant her long life. The drawings and the letter reached me before the Hilulah* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, and my response was written on the eve of the 15th of Shevat*, Rosh Hashanah* of the Trees. Now, I saw, in your drawings, little boys and little girls, trees and flowers.

To establish a link between all this, I will remind you of the affection, the intense love that my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, had for all Jewish men and all Jewish women, great and small. He felt a particular love for children, concerned himself with their education, sought their well-being, in every place. In every little boy, in every little girl, he saw a sprout that would grow and become a beautiful fruit tree, bearing good and pleasant fruits. Nevertheless, all this depends on the effort made by each little boy and each little girl. The image that allows one to understand this idea is that of the tree. When one plants a seed or a young sprout, one must preserve it from weeds and from everything harmful, water it, until it becomes a tree bearing beautiful fruits. The same is true for every little boy and every little girl. Hashem says, through His prophet, that they are: "the fruits of My plantations, the work of My hands, of which I am proud."

Hashem has implanted within you a holy soul, a "veritable part of the Divine." You must therefore protect this divine seed from all bad and negative actions, that is to say from bad company, and bring it living water. Now, "there is no water but the Torah*" (note 2: According to Tractate* Bava Kamma* 17a.), the Torah* of life, and its Mitzvos*, which "breathe life into those who fulfill them." In this way, Hashem will grant you His blessing, and He will grant it to you again, so that you may become trees bearing beautiful and good fruits, for the joy of your parents and your teachers, for the honor and glory of our people, the nation of the children of Yisrael*. קבלתי בשמחה את הציורים שלכם עם מכתב המורה והגננת שלכם מרת רחל שתחי' זמיר.

הציורים והמכתב הגיעו לידי לפני ההילולא (יארצייט) של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, והמענה שלי נכתב ערב ט"ו בשבט, ראש השנה לאילנות. והרי גם בציוריכם ראיתי ילדים וילדות ואילנות ופרחים. ולקשר את כל הענינים האלה, אזכיר לכם החיבה והאהבה היתרה שרחש כ"ק מו"ח הרבי לכל בני ובנות ישראל, הגדולים עם הקטנים, ובפרט הקטנים אשר דאג לחינוכם ולטובתם בכל מקום שהם, ובכל ילד וילדה ראה שתיל העתיד לגדול ולהיות עץ-פרי הדר נושא פירות טובים ונחמדים. אמנם דבר זה תלוי ברצונם ועבודתם של הילד והילדה, והמשל לזה הוא האילן. כשנוטעים גרעין או שתיל רך, צריך לשמור עליו מעשבים רעים וכל מיני מזיקים, ולהספיק לו מים וכולי, עד אשר יגדל ויהי' לאילן נושא פירות טובים. והוא הדבר בכל ילד וילדה, אשר אמר השם יתברך על ידי נביאו שהם "נצר מטעי מעשה ידי להתפאר". והנה הבורא יתברך נטע בתוככם נשמה קדושה, חלק אלוקה ממעל ממש, ועליכם לשמור "גרעין" אלוקי זה מעשבים רעים ומזיקים, זאת אומרת מחברים בלתי הגונים, ולהספיק לו מים חיים, ואין מים אלא תורה, תורת חיים, ומצוותי' שחיים הם לעושיהם, ואזי יתן ויחזור ויתן לכם השם יתברך ברכתו שתצליחו להיות "אילנות" נושאי פירות טובים ומשובחים, לשמחת הוריכם ומוריכם ולגאון ולתפארת עמנו, עם בני ישראל.
