I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 20 Kislev*, as well as the books you have published, and I thank you very much for them. Of course, if you publish other works, you will not fail to send them to my library, in the interest of all.

Custom dictates that everything be systematically linked to current events. Now, your letter reached me during the days of Chanukah*. And, one of the lessons delivered by the lights of this festival is the necessity of adding, advancing, lighting an additional candle, one more light. As various texts establish, the lights of Chanukah* evoke: "the candle (which) is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* (which) is a light," as well as: "the candle of Hashem (which) is the soul of man." Indeed, to whoever makes an addition to this candle of the Mitzvah* and to the light of the Torah*, more is added to the satisfaction of all needs, both spiritual and material. Based on what you write about your origins, it is surely unnecessary to elaborate on what has just been said to someone like you. With my respects and my blessing,

כמנהג ישראל לקשר הענינים עם עניני דיומא, וכיון שמכתבו הגיע בימי החנוכה, הרי מהוראות נר חנוכה להיות מוסיף והולך בנר ואור, וכמבואר בכמה מקומות נר חנוכה הוא סמל נר מצוה ותורה אור וגם נר ה' נשמת אדם, שכל המוסיף בנר מצוה ואור תורה מוסיפין לו בכל המצטרך לו מנפש ועד בשר גם יחד.

ועל פי כתבו על דבר גזע צור מחצבתו, האריכות בהאמור לדכוותי' בודאי אך למותר.
