(Chanukah* 5725)

"The poor young men (note 1: See the Shaar HaHalachah VeHaMinhag*, vol. 2, p. 265.) have the custom of going from door to door" (note 2: During the festival of Chanukah*, to solicit donations.), as reported by the Magen Avraham*, at the beginning of the laws of Chanukah*, cited by the Divrei Nechemyah* and the supplement of the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, at the end of chapter 670, but one may still inquire about this matter, for I find no allusion to it in the customs of Chanukah* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*. Certainly, the fact of not having seen it does not constitute proof, especially when it concerns Tzedakah*, for which discretion is a quality.

Nevertheless, one must remember that aside from what is explained in the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "The 25th of Kislev*," in the Torah Or*, with its commentaries in the Shaarei Orah* and the Or HaTorah*, emphasizing that the act of Tzedakah* is called: "helmet of salvation" and that in this instance, the self-sacrifice of Chanukah* aroused an immense gift and revealed this helmet of salvation, no other Chassidic* discourse, of all those I have been able to see to this day, no talk, no letter of our masters mentions a Tzedakah* specific to the festival of Chanukah*, whereas numerous (note 3: The Rebbe* underlines the word: "numerous.") aspects of this festival are presented therein in detail. By contrast, several books of Polish Chassidus* do indeed mention it.

If someone finds an allusion to all this in the teachings of our masters, he will surely let me know and I thank him in advance, from the depths of my heart. The Siddur Maharid*, in a passage whose author is perhaps the Tzemach Tzedek*, explains that on Chanukah*, one distributes "money to the poor, who go from door to door, that is to say to the door of the house, outside, which corresponds well to the meaning of the expression: 'with all your might,' that is to say 'with all your money.'"

... נוהגין הנערים העניים לסבב על הפתחים כו'...

מגן אברהם ריש הל' חנוכה - הועתק בדברי נחמי' - השלמה לשו"ע אדה"ז סו"ס תר"ע. - אבל עדיין צ"ע בזה. כי לא ראיתי כל רמז לזה במנהגי חנוכה של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר. ואף שאין לא ראינו ראי', ובפרט בצדקה שמתן בסתר יפה בה - הרי, לכאורה מילתא הוא מה ש(לבד ממשנ"ת בד"ה בכ"ה בכסלו - בתו"א וביאוריו בשערי אורה ואוה"ת - דמעשה הצדקה נק' כובע ישועה ומס"נ דחנוכה המשיכה מתנה מרובה המשכת כובע ישועה להיות כו') לא אשתמיט להזכיר בשום מאמר חסידות (שראיתי ע"ע) או שיחה ומכ' רבותינו ע"ד צדקה במיוחד בחנוכה (אף שכו"כ עניני חנוכה נזכרו ונתבארו בהם ובפרטיות). ובפרט שנמצא הוא בכמה מס' פולין וכו'. ומי שימצא עד"ז בתורת נשיאינו ודאי יודיעני ות"ח מראש מקול"ע. - בסי' מהרי"ד (ואולי קטע זה מהצ"צ) מבאר הנ"ל שבחנוכה חולקין "מעות לעניים שמחזרין על הפתחים, שהוא על פתח הבית מבחוץ שהוא בחי' בכל מאדך בכל ממונך".
