(End of Mar Cheshvan* 5725)
I (note 1: This letter is addressed to Rav Yitzchak Zalman Posner and written on his correspondence, which is dated 22 Mar Cheshvan 5725. See, regarding him, letter no. 6079.) respond (note 2: See Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 32, p. 231.) to the questions (note 3: Rav Posner asked the Rebbe* about his statement, in Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 3, p. 760, based on the Tzafnas Panei'ach*, according to which circumcision is a situation that extends over time. This allows one to understand the view of the Tosafos*, in Tractate* Kiddushin* 29a, stating that circumcision is not a Positive Commandment that has a specific time. But is it not performed on the eighth day?) that you posed to me previously. Circumcision presents three aspects: there is, first of all, the act of circumcision, then the fact of being circumcised, and finally, the fact of not being uncircumcised. This does not, however, make them three (note 4: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "three," "Mitzvah," "sees," "identical," "chooses," "chooses," and "imposes.") Mitzvos* and the existence of a specific time or not depends on the Mitzvah* (note 4) itself, which is unique, not on its specific aspects. From the eighth day on, there is not a single instant in which this Mitzvah* does not apply.
Free will (note 5: Rav Posner asked the Rebbe* about his statement, in Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 4, p. 1309, according to which free will is true when there is no reason, no logical justification for the choice. Indeed, if such a reason exists, it is a matter of evidence and no longer of choice. Now, the Sefer HaMaamarim* 5660 explains, from p. 10, that free will can only be granted to one who is endowed with discernment.) can only be granted to one who is endowed with discernment. If this were not the case, there would be, on his part, only a natural reaction, or he would do nothing. On the other hand, one could not say, in this case, that one sees (note 4) two identical (note 4) possibilities and that one makes the choice (note 4) of one of them. Similarly, one cannot say that a blind person chooses (note 4) a color from among the others. Nevertheless, one who is endowed with discernment finds himself in a situation in which his intellect does not impose (note 4) upon him a color or an idea as an evidence. In fact, his intellect only shows him the colors or the ideas.
