Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8907 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 23 · Letter 232
By the grace of Hashem,
27 Mar Cheshvan* 5725,
Brooklyn, New York,
To Mr. P. Yosef,
I greet you and bless you,
I respond to your letter of 9 Mar Cheshvan*, in which you tell me that you encountered the Chabad* movement while you were still in Holland. You indicate to me where you are currently pursuing your studies and you inform me that it is sometimes difficult for you to observe that those who have broader knowledge than yours adopt an improper attitude regarding the Mitzvos*. Our Sages* have taught us (note 1: In Tractate* Avos*, chapter 1, Mishnah* 17.) that the deed is essential and I therefore have good hope that your sentiment, the attitude that you deplore, will have the consequence of drawing your attention to the people to whom you allude. In this way, you will exercise an influence on them, so that they modify their conceptions. Indeed, the assurance has been given to us that words emanating from the heart penetrate into the heart and have their effect, in particular when one also sets a good example through one's own daily existence, an existence of Torah* and Mitzvos*. For, nothing can withstand the will. If, in every place, the Mitzvah*: "You shall love your fellow as yourself," which is a "great principle of the Torah*," is important, if it is fitting to teach the way of the Torah* and the Mitzvos* to those who err and are lost, how much more must this be so in the "land toward which the eyes of Hashem are always turned, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year," in particular for those who study in a school that trains educators and teachers, charged with guiding numerous students. And, it is known that, in order to teach a certain subject to children, the teacher must possess it in a much more profound manner (note 2: Than the content of his teaching.).
I hope that you have seen my letter that was addressed to all, on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah* (note 3: This is letter no. 8886.). In the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, it was published in the Holy Tongue. One of the essential points developed therein is the fact that a single person can accomplish grandiose achievements, wonders in the domain of good, provided that he uses all the strengths at his disposal in the proper manner. You surely have knowledge of the studies concerning the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, which pertain to everyone. You therefore learn them each day. With my blessing of success and to give me good tidings,
For the Rebbe* Shlita*,
the secretary,
N.B.: Here we write in the Holy Tongue, in English, and in Yiddish. Please indicate to me in which language it would be fitting to write to you in the future.
