Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8903 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 23 · Letter 228

By the grace of Hashem,

21 Mar Cheshvan* 5725,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

It seems that the dispute has not yet subsided (note 1: See, regarding this, letters no. 8897 and 8899.) and this leads me to say that I feel the greatest pain about it. It is also painful, and perhaps even more so, to observe that someone has led you to think that one must apply, in this matter, the principle (note 2: Enunciated by Tractate* Yevamos* 92a.) according to which: "the Law must bend the mountain," as if tremendous success would result from adopting this attitude and the opposite of success from opting for another solution. It seems that you are devoting much time, much energy, much attention to all this, to how you should react.

Now, you know, you have observed to what extent your success has been supernatural. Without a doubt, there was not, at that time, only peace, calm, and tranquility. Indeed, we find ourselves in this material world and, according to the words of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* (note 3: See Sefer HaSichos* 5687, p. 84, as well as letters no. 1504 and 5339.), since the sin of the Tree of Knowledge was committed, there is no good that is not... (note 4: Tainted by evil.). Then, all of a sudden, you accord great importance to what has only very little or perhaps even less than that. Certainly, I do not express myself on this importance as such, since I am not on the spot. Nevertheless, it is quite obvious that, when a committee has been constituted, counting several members and designated before this event even occurred, it is not possible to set aside its decision, even if it does not please one of the parties. The competence of this committee must not be reduced for, ultimately, there is no other means of directing an activity assumed by several people at once, without a body being able to adjudicate between them and make a final decision when disagreements arise. The Torah* itself specifies that one must adopt the position of the majority.

If what has just been said applies to everyone, how much more is this the case for you yourself, since every hour, every half-hour that you devote to this dispute could be put to use, in a far more effective manner, regarding the schools. Indeed, Divine Providence* has granted you the merit and the success of being a director. These half-hours and these hours will thus be multiplied by the number of students (note 5: The Rebbe* specifies: "male students and female students.") of the schools, by their success. I have good hope that it is unnecessary to say more. You will gladden me by announcing good tidings if you tell me that you have forgotten all this, that you are pursuing your sacred mission, in joy and enthusiasm — the education of the sons and daughters of Yisrael* based on sacred values. Indeed, it is said regarding every Jew: "You are children to Hashem your Elokim*," to whom a specific love is devoted. I heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, a saying of the Baal Shem Tov* (note 6: See, regarding this, letter no. 8874.) according to which the love of Hashem for every Jewish man and every Jewish woman is infinitely more intense than that felt by elderly parents for their only son, born when they had already reached an advanced age. May Hashem grant that in the future, letters like this one be unnecessary.
