Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8901 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 23 · Letter 226 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
20 Mar Cheshvan* 5725,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and
devotes himself to communal needs, Rav* Shmuel (note 1: Rav S. Yalow, of Syracuse. See, regarding him, letter no. 8809.),
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your letter of this Tuesday (note 2: See Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 32, p. 232.), with what was enclosed, for which I am sending you a receipt. Your request for a blessing will be read, at a propitious moment, near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. I also thank you for your remark concerning the reference of the words of the Alter Rebbe*, in his golden Shulchan Aruch*, regarding the introduction into man of the soul of holiness (note 3: See, regarding this, Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 3, p. 763 and vol. 20, p. 246.). You cite the Chinuch*, in the source of the Mitzvah* of circumcision. It is said, indeed, that one does not raise an objection against a commentary (note 4: Since several can be proposed simultaneously, even when they are divergent. See Shaar HaPesukim* on the verse Shemos* 1:14.), but, in this case, the introduction of the soul of holiness into the body does have an impact on Halachah*, as is specified by the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, at the same reference. And, it turns out that, according to the Chinuch*, in two principles that he enunciates, the soul does not enter the body at the circumcision:
A) The circumcision, at the moment it is performed, constitutes a physical distinction, just as there was, before this (note 5: Which means that the soul was in the body already before the circumcision.), a moral distinction.
B) The circumcision, at the moment it is performed, completes the form of the body and, similarly, a man can complete the form of his soul through the quality of his actions, including long after this, when he will be obligated in the practice of the Mitzvos* (note 6: Which means that the soul enters the body after the circumcision.), this is quite obvious. And, you should also consult the reasons for circumcision, according to the Rambam*, in his Guide for the Perplexed, vol. 3, at the end of chapter 49.
I read with pleasure, at the end of your letter, that the publication of your book is progressing. May Hashem grant that you soon complete the remaining chapters and that, subsequently, you know advancement, from one level to the next, in accordance with the directive of our holy Torah*. Indeed, a Precept of the Torah* is also a force that is granted in order to be able to put it into practice. With my respects and my blessing,
