Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8897 — Chinuch

Volume 23 · Letter 222

By the grace of Hashem,

9 Mar Cheshvan* 5725,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the attention of Mr. A. Ron,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 5 Cheshvan* and I thank you. You inform me of disagreements between the directors of two schools in Yerushalayim*. I sent a telegram to Rav* Zevin Shlita* (note 1: See, regarding this, letter no. 8899.) and I asked him, with the assistance of our friends who are experts in pedagogy and who are on the spot and know both directors, that all of them consult one another so as to discover the best possible solution. I am sure that they will not delay in treating this problem with all the attention it deserves and that they will find the most just solution in the interest of the students (note 2: The Rebbe* specifies: "male students and female students."), which, ultimately, is indeed the essential aspect of this question, as well as in the interest of these directors. Moreover, and this is essential, both of them must signify their agreement (note 3: To the proposed solution, and not have it imposed upon them.). Indeed, in the domain of education, in particular, it is important that all those who contribute be satisfied, that they act of their own free will and not under constraint. For, a child is sensitive and, because of this, he reacts not only to what is evident to him, but also to the feeling of the heart of the teacher and the educator, to his state of mind, as well as to the relationship that he maintains with him. To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to say more.

I was satisfied to observe, in your letter, to what extent you take an interest in these schools and I deduce from this, by similarity, that you must take an interest also in the other schools. I would therefore like to thank you for having drawn my attention to the specific problem posed by these two institutions. I consider it a mark of appreciation and faithful friendship toward Chabad* and all that concerns it. Our Sages* ask (note 4: In Tractate* Berachos* 28a.) for elevation in all that is positive. I hope that you yourself will indeed adopt this attitude in this matter, that you will strengthen even more clearly your relationship, and I thank you in advance for this. This is in addition, of course, to the essential point, the fact that: "the reward of the Mitzvah* is the Mitzvah* itself."

To pass from one idea to another while remaining in the same context, although I do not know if this falls within your field of activity, I will now make reference to the school of Manachat*. I have been written that it is being envisaged, as a possibility, to eliminate the upper grades and transfer them to Azbastonym*. Of course, it is not easy to consider all aspects of the question when one is on another continent. Nevertheless, it is clear that, in the near future, the population of Manachat* is destined to grow. The period therefore demands that one broaden, on the contrary, the educational structure that exists at present, so that it may integrate the children of those who will settle there subsequently. Indeed, the increase in population is not limited to the beginning of the school year, but occurs throughout the year. I also permit myself to enclose a copy of the letter that I addressed to all, on the occasion of this Rosh Hashanah* (note 5: This is letter no. 8886.). I hope that it will interest you. The connection with what was said previously, insofar as it is necessary that there be one, is quite clear. Indeed, the content of this letter allows one to establish that you possess the power to act, in these two domains (note 6: The schools of Yerushalayim* and that of Manachat*.), far beyond what you imagine. With my respects and my blessing,
