By the grace of Hashem,
6 Mar Cheshvan* 5725,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the attention of the distinguished and agreeable Chassid*, chosen by the people,
who surpasses them, who seeks the good of his people, of
generous conduct, descended from an illustrious family,
Rav* Shneur Zalman (note 1: S. Z. Shazar, President of Eretz Yisrael*. See, regarding him, letter no. 8682.) Shlita*,
I greet you and bless you,
I have just learned from the press (note 2: See Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 10, p. 235.) that your brother has been authorized to leave his country (note 3: Soviet Russia.) and that he is now settling in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. It seems that this follows from the information you communicated to me in your previous correspondence. Consequently, I address to you, in this regard, my blessing of Mazal Tov*, for the joy of every Jew is that of the entire community. Moreover, a single Jewish soul is in itself an entire world (note 4: According to Tractate* Sanhedrin* 37a.). This is one of the reasons why man was created unique.
May Hashem therefore grant that we go from the deliverance of the individual to that of the community. The departure of your brother will prepare the opening of the gates of that country, an opening that is broad and imminent, thanks to the kindnesses of Hashem, which never cease. And, to pass from one item of news to another, I communicate to you a joyful piece of information from here. The Sefer HaMaamarim* of the Alter Rebbe* 5562 (note 5: 1801-1802.) has at last been published. It has been sent to you, by separate mail.
It seems to me that, when I showed you the manuscript, I pointed out its particular character to you. Indeed, these discourses are those of the Alter Rebbe*, but the author of the manuscript is the Mitteler Rebbe* (note 6: See the introduction to the discourses of the Alter Rebbe* in the Sefer HaMaamarim* of the Alter Rebbe* 5562, vol. 1, and the list of the discourses of 5562 in the Sefer HaMaamarim* of the Alter Rebbe* 5562, vol. 2, p. 663.). This manuscript was in the possession of the Tzemach Tzedek*, who attests to its authenticity and who corrected various passages, which establishes its accuracy. I am filled with fear and trepidation at the thought of issuing a definitive opinion on Chassidus*, all the more so regarding the discourses of the Alter Rebbe*, of whom the Tzemach Tzedek* himself, who had the heart of a lion, said: "His ways are as far from ours as the Holy of Holies is from the most profane place," according to the Tzemach Tzedek*, Yoreh De'ah*, chapter 63, paragraph 8. This is true of his commentaries on the revealed part of the Torah* and, all the more so, of those on its profound dimension. Were it not for this fear, I would say that the transcription of several discourses of the Sefer HaMaamarim* 5562 is more adapted, more faithful than that of the texts of the Likkutei Torah*, although the latter were published during the lifetime of the Tzemach Tzedek* and presumably under his responsibility. But, when he published the Likkutei Torah*, the Tzemach Tzedek* perhaps did not have this manuscript at his disposal.
You have surely received, in their time, my previous correspondence, as well as the Sefer HaSichos* 5702 (note 7: 1941-1942, of the Rebbe Rayatz*.), which I transmitted to you through the intermediary of the rabbi of Chaifah*, Rav* Dovid Assaf, during his visit here, since he has now returned to the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. In this regard, I wished not to waste your time, for I know that you have many occupations and I therefore hesitated to ask Rav* Assaf to bring this book to you personally (note 8: Thus imposing upon President Shazar the obligation of receiving him.), but I could not ask him not to do so, especially after he showed me the acrostic Chabad* — Chochmah*, Binah* and Daas* (note 9: The three intellectual faculties.) — appearing in the words of the great master, the Rambam*, in his Mishneh Torah*, in his Laws of the Foundations of the Torah*, chapter 2, paragraph 2. He rules, indeed, the Halachah* according to which it is necessary to learn the foundations of the Torah* and to meditate upon them, through one's faculties of Chochmah*, Binah* and Daas*. Moreover, he adds, it is only in this manner that one can put the Mitzvos* into practice, in a concrete way. Here is what he explains, in a clear and precise manner: "How can one love Hashem and fear Him? For this, a person must meditate, observe His Chochmah*, be animated by a great desire to know, Daas*, His great Name."
It is known that the Rambam*, in this work, is particularly precise, all the more so when it concerns foundations of the Torah*. In this instance, he says: "How can one?" and one must deduce from this that there is no other means of attaining the love and fear of Hashem. Moreover, the Rambam* introduces his statement by specifying that the love and fear of Hashem are Mitzvos* of the Torah*, but also, as he himself immediately indicates, the foundations of the practice of the Mitzvos*. With my respects and my blessing,
