Volume 23 · Letter 218

By the grace of Hashem,

30 Tishrei* 5725,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of this Monday (note 1: This letter is addressed to a Rav*.), in which you speak to me about a young woman who met a non-Jew. After they exchanged many words and a long period elapsed, this non-Jew expressed the wish to convert, in the proper manner and, of course, to commit himself to putting the Mitzvos* into practice. You wonder how you should regard this proposition, since his primary motivation is the encounter with this young woman. In a general manner, my purpose is not to render halachic* rulings. Moreover, in a large city like New York, many are those who are in a position to do so. Nevertheless, since you wrote to me, I will propose an explanation, in the lines below, which should not, however, be considered as a definitive halachic* ruling.

You seem to indicate that the relationship that was established between them is very strong. Therefore, who knows? On the other hand, even in a case where the conversion poses no problem, one recalls what our Sages* say (note 2: In Tractate* Bava Metzia* 59b.), regarding a deviation (note 3: "The deviation, on the part of converts, is bitter."). In this matter, one must also take into account the disparagement that may result for the family. The best solution, in this case, is therefore the following. According to you, the desire of this non-Jew to convert is sincere. He will therefore admit that he is not in a position to evaluate the weight exerted by the Mitzvos* on his daily existence, as long as he has not made a concrete trial. Moreover, he himself acknowledges that the beginning of his approach was not disinterested. He therefore cannot be objective in the evaluation that he makes of his own person and he does not know if he will truly be able to put all this into practice.

The best proposal is therefore this. Let him first adopt a daily conduct that conforms to the Shulchan Aruch*, for a certain period of time. During this entire period, he himself and the young woman will not be troubled, for they will avoid meeting. Better yet, they will not remain in the same city. At the end of this trial, he will be able to make a decision, to know whether or not he is capable of living in conformity with the Law of Moshe* and Yisrael*. In the meantime, it would be good to arrange for the young woman to go, for example, to our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. In this way, as I said, each person will be able to determine his true intention in this matter. In accordance with your request, this letter is being sent to you by passing over the queue. With my respects and my blessing,
