Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8890 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 23 · Letter 215 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,

eve of Sukkos* 5725,

at the time of Minchah*,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the great Rav*, agreeable and erudite man, who fears Hashem,

who gives explanations, of multiple areas of knowledge, master

of masters, Rav* Y. D. (note 1: Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, of Boston.) HaLevi and his entire family,

may Hashem grant you long days and good years,

I thank you for your letter of blessing of this Tuesday, eve of Yom Kippur* (note 2: In which Rav Soloveitchik extended his condolences to the Rebbe*, after the passing of his mother, Rebbetzin* Channah, which occurred on the holy Shabbos*, 6 Tishrei*, at the time of Minchah*.), when the words of the verse were fully realized: "And Hashem consoled" — precisely of His own will. The reward was great and the elevation immense. It was "the day of the joy of His heart" (note 3: See Tractate* Taanis* 26b.). Indeed, your words have already been expressed beforehand, in these terms: "I will bless those who bless you," with the blessing of Hashem whose interest surpasses the principal (note 4: See Midrash* Bereishis Rabbah*, chapter 61, paragraph 4, and the lengthy explanation developed in Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 5, from p. 422.). May Hashem grant that very soon and in our days, we merit, among all of Yisrael*, to witness the consolation of Tzion* and Yerushalayim* (note 5: See also the following letter.) and the fulfillment of the promise according to which: "He will cause to disappear... and He will wipe away the tears from all faces." Then, "they will awaken and rejoice, those who rest beneath the earth," for Hashem will revive them through the dew of the intense celestial light. With my consideration, my respects, and my blessing on the occasion of the festival (note 6: Of Sukkos*.) regarding which joy is mentioned three times in the Torah*,

As a follow-up to our discussion (note 7: When Rav Soloveitchik came to extend his condolences to the Rebbe*. See, regarding this, letters no. 8891 and 8899.), I subsequently found a commentary of the Mishnah* (note 8: Of the Rambam*.) stating, in Tractate* Demai*, chapter 1, Mishnah* 2, that the declaration: "I did not consume the tithe in the state of an Onen*" (note 9: The mourner who has not yet buried his relative. See the verse Tavo* 26:14.) is understood as referring to before the burial. This is also the explanation given by the Rosh*, at the end of Tractate* Maaser Sheini* (note 10: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Chapter 5, Mishnah* 12. He discusses the view of Rabbi Ovadyah of Bartenura.").

You conclude your letter by mentioning the verses: "to see the Kohen*" and: "to Levi, he said." You should consult what the Arizal* says, on this subject, in his Likkutei Torah* and in the Shaar HaPesukim* on Yechezkel*. He states, indeed, that, in the World to Come*, the Leviim* will become Kohanim*. And, you should also see the Tanya*, chapter 50 (note 11: See also the Shiurim B'Sefer HaTanya, at that reference, in note 15.), which adds, on this subject: "The present Leviim* will be (note 12: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "present will be," "presently," and "new.") Kohanim* in the World to Come*." One may think that he responds, by this clarification, to the objection that one could raise, on this point, from the verse: "for us and for our children, for eternity," as cited by the Rambam*, in his Laws of the Foundations of the Torah*, at the beginning of chapter 9. Consequently, he explains that those who are presently (note 12) Leviim*, and not in the World to Come*, will be, in that World to Come*, Kohanim* from their birth.

I have just consulted the edition of the commentary of the Mishnah* (note 8) that was published by Rav Kafah, in Yerushalayim*, in 5723 (note 13: 1963.). The editor makes mention there of a manuscript of the Rambam*, in his possession, in which the latter had crossed out the phrase, previously cited, which does appear in our editions. He indicates, in the margin, the phrase that he reproduces: "One is an Onen*, according to the Torah*, only on the actual day of the death," as he also indicates in the Yad HaChazakah*. And one adopts a positive conclusion. At the beginning of Sefer HaMaamarim* 5629 (note 14: 1869, of the Rebbe Maharash*.), published in Brooklyn, in 5719 (note 15: 1959.), it is explained, presumably based on a commentary (note 16: One should see, on this topic, what is indicated at that same reference, in the notes of the 5752 (1992) edition of this Sefer HaMaamarim*.) of the Tzemach Tzedek* (note 17: This is the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "Thus shall you bless," appearing in the Or HaTorah*, Parshas* Nasso*, p. 270.), that the blessing of Hashem also has the value of a prayer, "May it be Your Will to..." It is therefore capable of arousing a new (note 12) will to heal or to bless.
