Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8880 — Tzedakah

Volume 23 · Letter 205

By the grace of Hashem,

eve of Rosh Chodesh* Elul* 5724,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the attention of the distinguished and agreeable Chassid* who fears

Hashem, chosen by the people, who surpasses them, who seeks the good

of his people, of generous conduct, descended from

an illustrious family, Rav* Shneur Zalman (note 1: S. Z. Shazar, President of Eretz Yisrael*. See, regarding him, letter no. 8682.) Shlita*,

I greet you and bless you,

You have surely received my previous correspondence. Moreover, you must have received my greetings which were conveyed to you by the guests who had come here some time ago. I will not conceal from you (note 2: See, regarding this, letter no. 8871.) that I was pained to learn that you were not personally present at the opening session of the fifth great assembly. No doubt there are good reasons justifying this, but the facts are not changed thereby.

We are on the eve of Rosh Chodesh* Elul* and it is therefore timely to recall the words of the Alter Rebbe*, defining the propitious character of this month of mercy. He compares it, indeed, to a King Who, before His arrival in the city, is welcomed by the townspeople. They come to greet Him, in the field, and, thereupon, whoever wishes may address Him. He reserves a benevolent welcome for all, as is explained in Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Re'eh*, p. 32b. May Hashem therefore grant that what has been said above be accomplished also in the manner that was described by the Alter Rebbe*, that is, with the benevolence of Hashem and that this be revealed in the same manner here below.

To pass from one notion to another, regarding the King of the world, I will express my hope that the words of blessing that you will deliver on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah*, which approaches for good, will make clear mention of the Name of Hashem, Who is crowned by all and Who is the source of all blessings, including the one that will enable you to forgive me for this remark. With my consideration, my respects, my blessing to be inscribed and sealed for a good year, for a good and sweet year,
