To Mr. Shneur Zalman Mischari (note 1: See, regarding him, letter no. 8712),

I greet you and bless you,

I received, with pleasure, your letter of 26 Tammuz* and I thank you for your attention. I note the feeling of your heart and your love for Kfar Chabad*, one of the manifestations of your love of one's fellow. A strengthening in this matter is timely, especially in these days, "between the straits" (note 2: Between the fasts of 17 Tammuz* and 9 Av*, commemorating the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash*). Indeed, the second Beis HaMikdash* was destroyed due to gratuitous hatred, as our Sages have informed us (note 3: In tractate Yoma* 9b). It is quite clear that we received the Injunction to commemorate this destruction, in particular during these days, precisely with the purpose of repairing it. Indeed, according to the text of the prayer, "it is due to our sins that we were expelled from our land." Now, to make the effect disappear, one must eliminate the cause, for every reduction, every weakening of this cause reduces and weakens the effect, even if it is, for the time being, only in the upper worlds, as Chassidus* explains. And, the fault, in this instance, was essentially gratuitous hatred. Its repair is therefore gratuitous love (note 4: See letter no. 8867). May Hashem grant that we soon merit the end of the exile, the true and complete deliverance through our righteous Moshiach*. And, may these days be transformed into rejoicing and joy. בנועם הנני לאשר קבלת מכתבו מכ"ו תמוז, ות"ח בעד שימת לבבו.

... בראותי הרגש לבו ואהבתו לכפר חב"ד, בתוככי אהבת ישראל בכלל, הרי ההתחזקות בזה היא דבר בעתו בפרט בימים אלו שבין המצרים דחורבן בית שני שקרה מפני שנאת חינם, כהודעת חכמינו ז"ל. ופשוט שזה שנצטוינו לעשות זכר לחורבן, בימים אלו ביחוד, הכוונה היא בשביל התיקון, שהרי החורבן הוא כנוסח התפלה ומפני חטאינו גלינו מארצנו, ואי אפשר לביטול המסובב כי אם על ידי ביטול הסיבה, וכל גרעון וחלישות בסיבה מביאה גרעון וחלישות בהמסובב, אפילו הוא - כמבואר בתורת החסידות - לעת עתה רק בעולמות העליונים. וכיון שעיקר החטא הי' שנאת חינם, הרי תיקונו באהבת חינם.

ויהי רצון שבקרוב ממש נזכה לקץ גלותנו ולגאולה האמתית והשלימה על ידי משיח צדקנו, ויהפכו ימים אלו לששון ולשמחה.
