Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8868 — Prayer
Volume 23 · Letter 192
By the grace of Hashem,
5 Menachem Av* 5724,
Brooklyn, New York,
To Mr. Shmuel Yitzchak Avidor,
I greet you and bless you,
I am somewhat surprised that you have not written to me since the last letter I received, already several months ago. I hope that you do not hold against me the delay in my correspondence, which is due to my occupations. Now, to my great sorrow, not all of these occupations are linked to joy. According to the formulation of your letter, I hope that you took part in several Chassidic gatherings in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. Consequently, I was somewhat astonished to note that your name did not appear among those of the participants at the celebration commemorating 12 Tammuz*, at Kfar Chabad*. But, you undoubtedly attended such a celebration in another place in the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt.
To someone such as you, it is unnecessary to recall that the purpose of a commemoration is the motivation to concrete action, in this instance in the spirit of the one whose joy and liberation we celebrate, on 12 and 13 Tammuz* (note 1: The Rebbe* Rayatz*). Indeed, the latter gave of himself to strengthen and disseminate the Torah* and its Mitzvos*, without taking into account the hindrances and obstacles. In these days that are "between the straits" (note 2: Between the fasts of 17 Tammuz* and 9 Av*, commemorating the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash*), it is, of course, judicious and appropriate to commit oneself in this direction. The memory of the destruction reminds us of its cause and confronts us with it. As we say in the prayer (note 3: See the preceding letter), "it is due to our sins that we were expelled from our land." And, one remembers in order to repair it, for it is not possible to make the effect disappear otherwise than by eliminating the cause. May Hashem therefore grant that we soon witness the end of our exile, the true and complete deliverance through our righteous Moshiach*. Then, these days will be transformed into rejoicing and joy. Greeting your brother, with my respects, my blessing and thanking you for your greetings,
