Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8848 — Chinuch
Volume 23 · Letter 172 · To: participants à l’étude du Tanya
By the grace of Hashem, at the conclusion
of the holy Shabbos* of the Parshah* (note 1: Parshas* Korach*):
"I am your portion and your inheritance (note 2: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Rambam*, at the conclusion of the laws of Shemittah* and Yovel*"),
among the children of Yisrael* (note 3: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See Iggeres HaKodesh*, at chapter 23")" 5724,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the participants in the study of the Tanya*, in the synagogue
Shoneh Halachos* (note 4: "One who studies the laws"), in the city of Netanya, in our
Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt,
very soon and in our days, through our righteous Moshiach*,
may Hashem grant you long life,
I greet you and bless you,
I learned, with pleasure, that you have completed the study of the first part of the holy Tanya* (note 5: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "According to the terms of the approbations on the edition of the Tanya* published in Zolkvy, in 5559"). Without doubt (note 6: See also letter no. 8626), according to the well-known formulation (note 7: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "According to the paragraph recited for the Chasan Bereishis*"), "one brings the beginning close to the conclusion," which means that you immediately began the study of the second part, Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah*, with its introduction.
The idea of the conclusion of the first part is this: "For Hashem your Elokim* is a consuming fire, as is explained elsewhere." This reference perhaps points to the Chassidic discourse entitled: "For, on this day, you shall be expiated," found in the Likkutei Torah*, at the beginning of Parshas* Acharei*. The image of the consuming fire is the following. The fire can be grasped here below (note 8: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Likkutei Torah*, at this reference"), to the point of being defined as such and bringing light, only when it holds to a material wick, which it furthermore consumes (note 9: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "One should consult the Shulchan Aruch* of the Admur HaZaken*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 495, in the Kuntres Acharon*, at paragraph 22"). Now, it is the same for "Hashem," Who is "your Elokim*," that is to say: "your strength and your vitality," Who illuminates and reveals Himself here below precisely through the intermediary of the six hundred thirteen Mitzvos*, as the end of chapter 53 of the Tanya* briefly indicates, which is also the conclusion of its first part.
To truly put into practice (note 10: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Tanya*, at chapter 4") the Mitzvos*, one must feel love for Hashem, for this sentiment is the root (note 11: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the introduction of the second part of the Tanya*"), the foundation of the fulfillment of the Injunctions, among which is the Mitzvah* of the fear of Hashem, itself root and foundation of the observance of all the Interdictions. Such was the service of Hashem of Aharon* (note 12: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Likkutei Torah*, at the beginning of Parshas* Behaalosecha* and, at the same reference, in the commentary of the expression: 'from its stem'") who also manifested his love to the simple "creatures" (note 13: Those who have no other qualities than having been created by Hashem. The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tanya*, at chapter 32") and instilled in them the love of Hashem.
May Hashem grant that this study be great and that it lead to action, to the practice of the Mitzvos* (note 14: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the laws of Torah* study, of the Admur HaZaken*, chapter 4, at paragraph 3"). As the author of the Tanya*, the Admur HaZaken* (note 15: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Iggeres HaKodesh*, at chapter 27"), indicates, each person will follow the straight path that he taught us through his ways, on which we will maintain ourselves for eternity. It will be so in the service of Hashem, in celestial concerns and, even more clearly, in the occupations of the world, which Hashem will bless. And, the closer one is, the more promptly this blessing reveals itself. With my respects and my blessing,
