Volume 23 · Letter 170

By the grace of Hashem,

eve of the holy Shabbos* 3 Tammuz* 5724,

Brooklyn, New York,

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letter (note 1: This letter was addressed to several people. See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 8, at page 325. See also letters no. 8857 and 9020, as well as the discourse of 12 Tammuz* 5724). We are on the eve of the holy Shabbos* of the Parshah*: "I am your portion and your inheritance" and one knows the halachic ruling of the Rambam* (note 2: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "At the conclusion of the laws of Shemittah* and Yovel*") according to which these words do not apply solely to the tribe of Levi, but concern indeed "each man (note 3: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "And not 'all men,' for each of those to whom allusion is made here remains in the category to which he belonged beforehand, after having made this generous commitment, as the Megillas Esther*, chapter 1, at paragraph 8, the Targum* and the commentators explain, at this same reference. And, one should also see the Torah Or*, at page 37c, regarding the verse Tehillim* 87, 5. One can consider that, in this case, two categories must be defined, those who have the study of the Torah* as their sole activity and the others, as tractate Berachos* 35b and the Torah Or*, at the beginning of Parshas* Terumah* explain"), among the inhabitants of the world (note 4: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "This includes also the other nations, according to what one can deduce from tractate Rosh Hashanah*, chapter 1, at Mishnah* 2. And, this confirms the version of this Mishnah* adopted by the Rambam*. Indeed, the righteous among the nations have a share in the World to Come, as the Rambam* says, in his laws of kings, at the end of chapter 8"), whose heart is generous (note 5: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Shemos* 35, 21. This generosity is a feeling of the heart, as the Ramban* emphasizes, at this reference") and who understands, through his wisdom (note 6: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Through the intellect, involving the brain"), that he must separate himself (note 7: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to Divrei HaYamim* 23, 13, regarding the Kohanim* and the Kohen Gadol*, which corresponds to the term 'holy of holies,' since he alone can enter there. See the commentary of the Maharsha*, at the end of tractate Horayos*, the Zohar*, volume 3, at page 176b and tractate Bava Kamma* 38a"), stand before Hashem to serve Him (note 8: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Devarim* 10, 8"), devote himself to Him (note 9: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See tractate Menachos* 109b"), know Hashem, advance in uprightness (note 10: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the verse Koheles* 7, 29"), as Hashem has made him, cast off the yoke of the many contingencies that men impose upon themselves. Such a man is then consecrated holy of holies. Hashem will be his portion and his inheritance, forever and for eternity (note 11: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to the terms of the Sifri*, at the verse Devarim* 23, 7"). He will have the merit of receiving a good share in this world, as the merit that was conferred upon the Kohanim* and the Leviim* (note 12: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "This is what the Rambam* says, according to the Rome edition"). Thus, Dovid* (note 13: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Although he himself did not belong to the tribe of Levi") says (note 14: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Tehillim* 16, 5"): 'Hashem, fill my portion and my cup. You will sustain my lot' (note 15: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "It is here a question only of sustaining for an effort remains, in any case, necessary on the part of man, according to the Rambam*, laws of Torah* study, chapter 3, at paragraph 9. One should also see the laws of Torah* study, of the Admur HaZaken*, chapter 3, at paragraph 3. The same specification is also given by the Radbaz*, at this reference, but one can question this, for this is not 'the merit that was conferred upon the Kohanim*.' In fact, perhaps there is here a proof, supporting the position of the Kesef Mishneh*, at the same reference of the laws of Torah* study. For, one can think that the Rambam* sets aside only the half that is incumbent upon him. There are therefore only two possible ways: 'Hashem, fill my portion' and: 'You will sustain my lot.' But, this point will not be developed here")."

May Hashem grant that each person, within all of Yisrael*, redouble enthusiasm and ardor in the study of the revealed part of the Torah* and of Chassidus*. One will do so in good moral and physical health. Indeed, this Shabbos* is, in addition, the beginning of the deliverance of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, leader of Yisrael*, which is also our own deliverance and the freedom of our soul. With my blessing to give me good news of what concerns you personally and of your communal accomplishments,
