Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8842 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 23 · Letter 166

By the grace of Hashem,

eve of Rosh Chodesh* Tammuz* 5724,

Brooklyn, New York,

To Mr. Shalom Lewin (note 1: See, regarding him, letter no. 8681),

I greet you and bless you,

I have just received your letter of 4 Sivan* (note 2: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 13, at page 239), which, it seems, was delayed due to the strike. I was pained to note therein that you did not receive the response I had sent you, already several months ago. We are on the eve of the month of the liberation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* and I would therefore like to underscore here a point that is timely, concerning his imprisonment and his liberation. I allude to his activity in the domain of education, to which he devoted fifty-five years of his life (note 3: See the Sefer HaSichos* 5705, at page 78 and the Toras Menachem Hisvaaduyos* 5711, volume 1, at page 211). He was, indeed, eighteen years old when his father appointed him executive director of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* Lubavitch (note 4: See his biography at the beginning of the HaYom Yom* and the Kerem Chabad*, volume 3, at page 14), but, before that, he was already active in the matter. In all the countries to which his wanderings led him, upon his arrival, he devoted himself to education, before any other concern. And, it was the same in the United States. Here, the beginning of his work was the establishment of a network of educational institutions, from activities for children who do not even know the alphabet to the study of the Torah* enabling one to establish the Halachah* in all its depth, the revealed part of the Torah* and its esoteric dimension, Chassidus*, the profound teaching of the Torah*. Such was his action throughout his life and it is for this that he gave of his very self, at the time of the Yevsektsiya* (note 5: The Jewish section of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union). The merit of these actions protected him and it is thanks to this that he was subsequently liberated, with a high hand.

Of course, I do not relate all of this to you solely to detail the account. In fact, the one whose joy we celebrate himself commented on the significance of the event. What took place at that time must guide each one of us, illuminate our path so that one makes use of all opportunities, at all stages of the education of the sons and daughters of Yisrael*, in the spirit of the Torah*, of the Tradition, of the immutable values of our people. If certain elements raise barriers and obstacles, it is indispensable to overcome them, even if one must give of oneself to achieve this, all the more so since, for our part, this consists solely of offering one's will to Hashem (note 6: See the Torah Or*, Parshas* Mikeitz*, at page 36b). For, ultimately, it is indeed the truth that will prevail.

The children of Yisrael* are reputed for being stiff-necked and, in this capacity, I allow myself to return to a point that we discussed during our meeting, which I repeated in my letter and which I broach once again now. You will excuse me for having to express my reservations about your position, consisting of saying that the formulation of the protocol limits the framework of your activity and that everything else escapes you. This is not what we received from the house of our master, as I said above, concerning the teaching that is delivered by the episode of the deliverance of 12 and 13 Tammuz*. Perhaps it is even possible to say that your position does not conform to the notion, of general scope, that is introduced by our Sages, in a concise manner (note 7: In tractate Sanhedrin* 37a), in conformity with their habit: "A man is obligated to say: the world was created for me." The origin of this obligation is the mission, which is incumbent upon each person, to bring to light the unity in the world, the common points that link the most diverse domains. This indeed means that everything that exists in the world concerns every Jew, that the latter can direct it as if it belonged to him.

If this is so in all domains, how much more so is it the case for that of education, in particular in our era. Even if there is a doubt, the doubt of a doubt, numerous doubts, a Jew must do everything he can, in every place where his influence is exercised and Hashem will grant him success. I hope that you will commemorate the days of the liberation, 12 and 13 Tammuz*, in the fitting manner. With my blessing for a good month and to give me good news,

It is surely unnecessary to repeat to you that I would be satisfied to have knowledge of your reaction to all that has just been said, on condition that it be frank.
