Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8838 — Tzedakah

Volume 23 · Letter 162 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu

By the grace of Hashem,

23 Sivan* 5724,

Brooklyn,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, the Rav* Yitzchak Tzvi (note 1: The Rav Y. T. Libermann, of Manchester. See, regarding him, letter no. 590),

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter and I refer to what I discussed with your parents, during our conversation. You ask me the following questions:

A) Among the Chassidim* who devote themselves to the Esrogim* of Calabria, there is the Rav*, Chassid* of multiple accomplishments, the Rav Y. Jacobson and it seems to me that you have already been in contact, both of you. He himself has personally visited the Esrog* orchards in Italy and he has examined them.

B) He also knows the criteria for selection and the means of ascertaining that a tree has not undergone grafting.

C) You also speak of the manner in which the stem grows and of the protuberances. It must be verified whether, on the same (note 2: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "same," "same" and "these") tree, certain fruits have protuberances while others do not. The same applies to the different shapes of the stem. It seems to me that all these details do not appear in the books you mention, enumerating the distinctive signs of the fruits found on the same (note 2) tree. It is therefore necessary to verify all of this with someone who was on site and who was able to see it himself.

D) I hope that you have already received news from here through your parents, as well as through the guests from Manchester who came here for the time of the giving of our Torah*, for the preceding weeks and for the following weeks, as well as of what was said at these propitious moments. May Hashem grant that these words take effect, in conformity with their content, for: "the deed is essential" (note 3: According to tractate Avos*, chapter 1, at Mishnah* 17). With my respects, my blessing to give me good news of all of this and greeting your parents,

N.B.: The Bechorei Yaakov*, at the end of chapter 648, says that one does not rely on these signs, not even to adopt a stringent position. Several of the later Sages adopt the contrary position, but one can think that, even according to them, when there exists a tradition regarding a certain country and that, on a given tree, grow Esrogim* bearing the criteria that identify them, the other Esrogim* of the same tree are valid as well. Indeed, according to all opinions, these (note 2) criteria are not determinative (note 4: See, on this subject, letters no. 785 and 2995), except for having a thick peel, according to the Chasam Sofer*.
