Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8837 — Chinuch

Volume 23 · Letter 161

By the grace of Hashem,

at the conclusion of Shabbos* Parshas*

Behaalosecha* 5724,

Brooklyn, New York,

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letter (note 1: This letter was addressed to several people. See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 8, at page 285). We are at the conclusion of the Shabbos* of Parshas* Behaalosecha*, "when you kindle the lights" and one can find, in this Parshah*, the following teachings, which are stated there in an allusive manner. The Admur HaZaken* explains (note 2: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Likkutei Torah*, at the beginning of Parshas* Behaalosecha*") that these lights designate the souls of all the children of Yisrael*, as it is said: "the candle of Hashem is the soul of man" and "you are called men" (note 3: According to tractate Yevamos* 61a). Each person realizes this kindling in the manner described by this Parshas* Behaalosecha*, which means that ultimately, "the flame rises by itself" (note 4: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Commentary of Rashi*, at this reference. See also tractate Shabbos* 21a").

Such a request is made of each person and it is therefore certain that all have the strength to put it into practice, for "the Holy One blessed be He does not act with treachery toward His creatures" (note 5: According to tractate Avodah Zarah* 3a). The objective to reach is, in this instance, the following: "facing the Menorah* (note 6: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "This is the profound dimension and the will of all Jewish souls, which are compared to a Menorah*, according to the image stated by the Likkutei Torah*, at the same reference, chapter 1 and end of chapter 6"), the seven lights shall illuminate." In other words, each person, whatever his starting situation (note 7: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the laws of Torah* study, of the Admur HaZaken*, chapter 4, at paragraph 3"), regarding the practice of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, at one of the stages where one still seeks the satisfaction of a personal interest, will come to act in a disinterested manner (note 8: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Tanya*, at the end of chapter 41, which observes that: 'every Jew desires to unify his soul' and, specifies, even before that: 'one sincerely desires in one's heart, at least somewhat, the unification of the Holy One blessed be He and His Presence.'" The Rebbe* underlines the word: "sincerely").

And, the one who is qualified as "cast away" himself, who finds himself, quite evidently, in a situation much lower than the one who is simply "distant" (note 9: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Indeed, Teshuvah* has two motivations, the expiation of the faults one has committed, on one hand, the return of one's soul to its source, after its descent, on the other hand, as the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Devarim*, at page 66c explains in particular"), nonetheless receives the assurance that: "none shall be cast away," as the profound teaching of the Torah* rules and as its revealed part clearly establishes (note 10: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Tanya*, at the end of chapter 39. Laws of Torah* study, at the previously cited reference").

May Hashem grant that each person adopt the attitude that has just been described in all that concerns him, that he illuminate "facing the Menorah*." In this way, the one who, for the time being, is still defined as "cast away" will himself come to serve Hashem with the desire of his heart, thus adopting what was the service of Aharon* (note 11: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Vaeschanan*, at page 8b and the Zohar*, volume 3, at page 39a"), thanks to the level of Aharon* that is found in each person. Indeed, Aharon* was one of the seven shepherds of Yisrael* (note 12: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Torah Or*, at page 32b. See the Zohar Chadash*, in the Tikkunim*, at page 104a"). In this way, one will be able to observe that "from its stem to its flowers, it is of a single piece" (note 13: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Likkutei Torah*, at the beginning of Parshas* Behaalosecha*").

The stem is the lowest part of the Menorah*, while its flower constitutes its highest piece. But, all of this will indeed be "of a single piece," of "pure gold." With my blessing to give me good news,

M. Schneerson,

I address my blessing to you to give me good news of the Talmudic Encyclopedia (note 14: This paragraph was added to the copy of this letter addressed to the Rav Shlomo Yosef Zevin. See, regarding him, letter no. 8731) and, also (note 15: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "also," "on the contrary," "also," "also" and "Es," a Hebrew term introducing a direct object) so as not to accord it an accessory role, which may Hashem prevent, for it is, on the contrary (note 15), more important and greater. You will excuse me for telling you that all of this is done in the most burdensome manner. This allows one to understand the meaning of the verse: "He also (note 15) ascended" and, according to the commentary (note 16: See the Torah Shelemah* on the verse Vayigash* 46, 4, at paragraph 34) given of it, the term "also" (note 15) designates here the exile of Bavel. It seems that the Admur HaZaken* does not hold this opinion, in the Torah Or*, at the beginning of Parshas* Shemos* and you will see the commentary of Rashi* on tractate Shabbos* 89b. Conversely, the term Es (note 15) designates what always has an accessory role.
