Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8833 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 23 · Letter 157 · To: chapitre 36.

By the grace of Hashem,

beginning of the third month 5724,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the attention of the distinguished and pleasant Chassid*, elected by the people,

who surpasses them, seeks the good of his people, has

generous ways, is from an illustrious family,

the Rav* Shneur Zalman (note 1: Sh. Z. Shazar, President of Eretz Yisrael*. See, regarding him, letter no. 8682) Shlita*,

I greet you and bless you,

On the occasion of the festival of Shavuos* (note 2: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 13, at page 159), the time of the giving of our Torah*, which approaches, for us and for all of Yisrael*, for the good and for blessing, I address to you, by the present, my blessing that you receive the Torah* with joy and in a profound manner, according to the expression of the master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*.

It has already been explained, in various books, that the Ten Commandments extend to the entire chain of worlds and even to what surpasses it or again, in identical fashion, to the lowest point, "the most inferior that exists," according to the expression of the Admur HaZaken* in the holy Tanya* (note 3: At chapter 36). This is the reason that the beginning (note 4: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "beginning" and "end") of the Ten Commandments is: "I (Anochi*) am Hashem your Elokim* Who took you out of the land of Mitzrayim*," through a heavenly revelation. Indeed, Mitzrayim* was a situation infinitely lower than the Divinity, if one may express oneself thus. Moreover, the Name of Hashem, Elokim*, has the same numerical value as HaTeva, nature (note 5: According to the Pardes*, gate 12, at chapter 2. See, on this subject, the Sefer HaMaamarim* Melukat, volume 2, at page 93, note 76 and in the references indicated there). Likewise, there is no common measure between Elokim* and Havayah*, the Name that characterizes the Essence. And, the same distance exists also between Havayah* and Anochi*, I, for, according to the expression of the Zohar* (note 6: Volume 3, at page 257b. See the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Pinchas*, at page 80b), "I am the One that I am, to Whom no letter, no sign alludes."

The end (note 4) of the Ten Commandments alludes to the depths of Gehinnom*, for it is indeed in this place that it is necessary to specify: "You shall not steal." This warning is given to the one who possesses free will and who can therefore choose freely. It is so until the lowest point, since, as our Sages say (note 7: In tractate Sanhedrin* 38a), "the gnat itself preceded you." And, one should consult, on this subject, the Tanya*, at chapter 24.

Now, all that has just been said was given at one time and the Sages themselves emphasized (note 8: In the Mechilta*, cited by the commentary of Rashi* on the verse Yisro* 20, 1) the unity of these Ten Commandments, all issued in a single Word and simultaneously. In this way, the Torah*, of the same etymology as Horaah*, teaching, shows that the spirit and the form, the spiritual and the material are separated only in our eyes of flesh, which can even make us believe that they are opposed or that they are in conflict. The role of man, and it is said that: "you are called men" (note 9: According to tractate Yevamos* 61a), consists therefore of ensuring that the spirit prevails over form, spirituality over matter, until one can attach oneself, unite, until becoming totally inseparable. Every aspect of creation and, a fortiori, the whole of it must proclaim: "I am Hashem your Elokim*... you shall have no other deities..." as was the case at the giving of the Torah*, until one is permeated with the awareness that: "there is none other than Him." With my deference, my respects and my blessing for a joyous festival, as well as to extend the joy and the profundity of the reception of the Torah* over all the days of the year,
