Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8819 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 23 · Letter 143 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
18 Iyar* 5724,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
of multiple knowledge, the Rav S. Y. (note 1: The Rav Shlomo Yosef Zevin. See, regarding him, letter no. 8731),
I greet you and bless you,
I respond to your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos* and I refer to your questions in the order in which you posed them:
A) Regarding the "conservative" rabbis, in my humble opinion, it is difficult to understand how one can have a doubt about what is nonetheless quite evident. I mean that the reasonings or, to call them by their name, the compromises that you mention have no reason to be. In fact, these are not compromises, but rather an abrogation of principles. Indeed, they clearly demand to be recognized as being equivalent to the others, failing which there would be segregation. In consequence, a compromise in one domain will necessarily (note 2: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "necessarily," "one of them," "obviously," "proof," "only," "according to the Torah*," "not yet" and "evident") lead to others, in other domains, for example that of divorce and, above all, concerning synagogues, rabbis, marriages. Of course, they demand that it be so in the entire world and, most particularly, in our Holy Land*, may it be restored and rebuilt. But, they add that the presence of a specialist is necessary in each domain, someone who knows well the bills of divorce, in case of need and likewise for marriage or for synagogues.
The compromise according to which someone will choose one of them (note 2) in whom one can have confidence, to the exclusion of every other, will, obviously (note 2), be interpreted as proof (note 2) that there is no reason to set aside the "conservative" movement, that it suffices to address oneself to one of their specialists and that the same requirement applies to the Orthodox as well. Moreover, oil will be poured on the fire by saying that it is for the Orthodox to choose the specialists of the conservatives. There is therefore not a compromise here but, on the contrary, a manner of acting that will reinforce the divide. Moreover, one will not be saved for all that, for even if one chooses someone today, declaring him trustworthy, they nonetheless need rabbis and they will therefore themselves confer rabbinical ordinations. All of this is quite clear and it is therefore unnecessary to say more. I will only add two points, which are essential:
1) Whatever interpretation will be adopted by your committee and in your surroundings, the determining element in this matter will remain what public opinion and the press will deduce from it, particularly where their stronghold is found, that is to say, in New York. Indeed, here, they have a hold on all forms of publicity. You must understand what I mean.
2) You surely have knowledge of the war that is being waged, in London, against the Chief Rabbi Braudo, as well as the well-known express letter taking an "oath" against religious coercion. Recently, there have been the decisions of the convention of the conservatives and one can truly wonder whether the simultaneity of all these events is fortuitous. It is practically certain that there is a concerted stratagem here. If, which may Hashem prevent, one of the compromises that you enumerate or another is adopted, it will be used not only to introduce destruction in this domain, but also to reinforce the offensive by all means and in all domains. One has been able to observe concretely that this has indeed been so in the past. Indeed, it is always easier to control a process at its beginning. In this way, the controversy will be reduced, which is not the case when one capitulates. In this way, one opens the appetite of the other and, in time, one disappears totally, but the war to obtain this disappearance is much more bitter. It leads to much greater discord.
To show to what extent this "risk" is plausible, one can also advance another point. Based on the situation and according to your own words, the question arises only regarding a few (note 2) conservative rabbis. It is therefore not at all a matter of calling into question someone's livelihood or of dismantling communities. There is here only (note 2) a question of prestige. Even in the future, it is not certain that the number of those who want to issue divorces will be greater, for various reasons. It is therefore not a matter of capitulating before anyone, but only of renouncing prestige, in relation to their own conceptions.
You write to me that a large part of the collection comes from them. Similarly, it has been reported here that they represent hundreds of thousands of persons constituted as an organization. Nevertheless, if one admits such arguments, one must do the same for the Reform. Moreover, according to the statistics, the Reform are both richer and more numerous than they. You also cite the telegram and the information that was given here on this matter and which, for the time being, has not been denied. All of this indeed causes harm. Thus, a telegram would have been sent before the appointment ceremony to ask that one remain discreet and to give the assurance that after this appointment, a compromise will be found with them. It is also said that this telegram was supposed to remain confidential. In general, the position has been weakened here by the content of this telegram. Moreover, certain circles underline that this demand for confidentiality is proof that it is indeed a political maneuver, that in a way, one is trading in religion, that all of this is quite sufficient.
As I emphasized, I do not at all refer here to the existence of such a telegram, to its formulation and to the precision of this rumor. I am interested only in public opinion and in the manner in which it will react. For the time being, there is only this information, without denial, neither on its generality nor on its details. Then, in recent days, another rumor has been added to the preceding one. This man should come here on the occasion of the marriage of his grandson. It will therefore be easier to converse with him, for there will be no pressure, for example from the Neturei Karta*. Of course, here again, I do not vouch for the accuracy of this rumor. I consider only the harm that could result from it.
B) I read with interest what you say, in your letter, regarding the pleasure and the joy of Shabbos* and the festivals. It seems to me that this was discussed at a Chassidic* gathering, with a somewhat different explanation, according to the note that appears in the talk of Parshas Devarim* 5723 (note 3: 1963. See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 4, page 1090, in note 31).
Regarding the sending of religious articles to the countries of Africa, I will endeavor to do what is in my power, if you send me the addresses here. I thank you very much for the good news that you communicate to me, concerning the activities of your wife, the Rebbetzin*, in the vineyard of Chabad*. As I have always said, and you will kindly excuse me for repeating it, the verse specifies: "They made me the keeper of the vineyards, but my own vineyard, I have not kept." This means that, according to the Torah* (note 2), these are indeed vineyards. However, they must be distinguished from "my vineyard," to the point that one complains insistently in such a situation. As far as you are concerned, your vineyard (note 4: See, on this subject, letter no. 8899) is, in my opinion, the Encyclopedia (note 5: Talmudic) and, simultaneously, the dissemination of the wellsprings (note 6: Of the Chassidus*), in the manner that befits. Now, from the beginning of your letter, I fear to advance that you have been appointed keeper of the vineyards of the rabbinate, which are indeed vineyards, according to the Torah*, but not yours, a Mitzvah* that no other can fulfill in your place.
The request for a blessing appearing in your letter will be read near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us. May Hashem cause that you give me good news thereof. These days, I had a visit from the great Rav S. Elberg and, during our conversation, I reminded him of his promise (note 7: See, on this subject, letter no. 8847) to publish an issue of the Pardes (note 8: A rabbinical journal directed by the Rav Elberg) that would be devoted to the Admur HaZaken*, on the occasion of the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of his passing, Hilula*, which was last year. He responded to me that, during his visit to the Holy Land*, may it be restored and rebuilt, he asked you to contribute to it by writing an article. But, for the time being, this has not yet been followed up. Nevertheless, he gives the assurance that, shortly after receiving it, he will indeed publish this journal, with other articles. However, it will be necessary that yours not yet (note 2) have been published. It is no doubt unnecessary for me to add, for my part, anything to all of this. Nevertheless, basing myself on the statement of our Sages (note 9: In tractate Makkos* 23a) according to which "one counsels eagerness to those who naturally possess this quality," I invite you, too, to show zeal in this matter.
This day is that of Lag BaOmer*, date of the Hilula* of Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai* (note 10: See the following letter). I will therefore recall the statement of our Sages, at the beginning of the Midrash* Bereishis Rabbah*, according to which the Torah* constitutes the plans and the sketches on the basis of which the world was created. It is therefore the same for the small world that constitutes man (note 11: According to the Midrash* Tanchuma*, Parshas Pekudei*, at chapter 3). A fortiori is this the case for those who have the Torah* as their sole activity, the reference in this matter, according to tractate Shabbos* 11a, being Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai* and his companions. Now, the contribution of Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai* to the Torah* will allow one to understand what it is in the world. Thus, as the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "A man is obligated to say," of 5638 (note 12: 1878, of the Rebbe Maharash*) explains, at chapter 25, Rabbi Shimon* removed the separation that prevailed between the profound dimension of the Torah* and its revealed aspect, so that this profound part reveals itself manifestly. In consequence, he also adopted a similar conduct in the world, whose profound dimension is the Torah*. It is by studying it that he caused it to rain in the world, in the most literal sense, as the holy Zohar* relates and as the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "He will confiscate," of 5631 (note 13: 1871, of the Rebbe Maharash*) and the commentary on the river of Eisan explain.
From this results a teaching for the generation of the heel of Moshiach* which, from various points of view, is comparable to that of Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai*, according to the explanation developed by our Sages in the Zohar*, volume 3, at page 58a and based on the Zohar*, volume 1, at page 117a. Its objective and its essential mission must therefore be the bringing to light of the profound teaching of the Torah* or, according to the well-known formulation, the dissemination of the wellsprings (note 6) to the outside. In consequence, one can draw from all of this a lesson for the conduct that a man must adopt in the world. As the Rambam* says (note 14: In his laws of opinions, at the beginning of chapter 5), "it must be evident (note 2) that his actions are in conformity with the Torah*" and he then mentions ten actions — eating, drinking, commercial activities. In this way, the revealed part and the profound dimension can unite within a single Torah*. According to the expression of our masters and leaders, the verse "because (Eikev*) he listened" means that the heel (Eikev*) itself must be Chassidic*. With my respects and my blessing to give me good news of all of this,
