Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8816 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 23 · Letter 140
By the grace of Hashem,
Sunday of Parshas Emor*,
Pesach Sheini* 5724,
Brooklyn, New York,
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your letter (note 1: This letter was addressed to several persons. See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 7, at page 327). The content of these days is the following. Our Sages teach (note 2: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Yevamos* 114a, cited by the commentary of Rashi* on the Torah*, which therefore belongs also to the simple meaning of the verse"): "Say... and you shall say...: this puts on guard the adults regarding the children." Just as there exist, in the world in general, adulthood and childhood, it is the same for the small world that constitutes man (note 3: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Midrash* Tanchuma*, Parshas Pekudei*, at chapter 3"). Each one possesses an adult aspect and a childish side. The adult aspect of man is his head (note 4: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "As its name indicates. See tractate Shabbos* 61a"), his wisdom, his intellect, whereas his childish side is constituted by his limbs, by his concrete action (note 5: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah*, at chapter 9"). It is therefore asked of man that his adult aspect put on guard his childish side (note 6: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to tractate Kiddushin* 70a, a communal leader must not perform work before three persons and the Rambam* specifies: 'so that he not be devalued in their eyes'"). As our Sages underline (note 7: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the laws of Torah* study, of the Admur HaZaken*, chapter 4, at paragraphs 3 and 4"), study must lead to action. Moreover, it is said (note 8: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Bava Kamma* 17a") that: "great is the study that leads to action," for this stage indeed constitutes all its greatness (note 9: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the laws of Torah* study of the Admur HaZaken*, chapter 4, at paragraph 3").
In this matter, Pesach Sheini* delivers a teaching. As my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, leader of Yisrael*, explains (note 10: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "HaYom Yom*, at the date of the 14th of Iyar*"), "Pesach Sheini* indicates that nothing is ever definitively lost, that one can always repair. One who was impure, or found himself on a distant path, even if it was so 'for you,' of his own free will, can also repair" — so long as he truly desires it. Moreover, the limits of time disappear in this matter, which is not the case for the first Pesach* (note 11: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "These seven days are linked to it. Thus, tractate Pesachim* 95b says: 'one consumes it during six days' and 96b: 'the Chametz*, during seven days'"), which lasts seven days. Indeed, Teshuvah* can be realized in a single instant (note 12: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Zohar*, volume 1, at page 129a. See tractate Kiddushin* 49b. The beginning of Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, at page 91a, specifies that: 'the Mitzvah* of Teshuvah*, according to the Torah*, is a resolution in one's heart'"), in a second. There is no limitation in action either, unlike, once again, the first Pesach*, when it is forbidden to possess Chametz*. Indeed, when Teshuvah* is complete (note 13: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, at the end of chapter 8. In contrast, the first part of the Tanya*, at the end of chapter 8, speaks of a 'judicious Teshuvah*.' One will also consult tractate Yoma* 86b"), the intentionally committed sins, "for you," are transformed (note 14: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "It is not the same for the first Pesach*, as indicated by the Chassidic* discourse entitled: 'To understand the meaning of Pesach Sheini*,' in the Or HaTorah*, at Parshas Behaaloscha*, which compares the first and second Pesach* to the act of repelling evil and of transforming it into good") into merits (note 15: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Which breathe life, although they were previously sins, as the commentary of Rashi* on tractate Yoma* says"). Of the one who achieves Teshuvah*, it is said (note 16: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "One can acquire the World to Come in a single instant and even be called Rabbi, as tractate Avodah Zarah* 17a underlines. One will consult the Chassidic* discourses of the Admur HaZaken*, of Yom Kippur* 5562") that: "before he even moves, he is pardoned" and "he will be accepted by Hashem, pleasant and cherished before Him" (note 17: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, at the beginning of chapter 2. See the Rambam*, laws of Teshuvah*, at chapter 7"). With my blessing to give me good news, in general and more specifically,
