Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8815 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 23 · Letter 139 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
10 Iyar* 5724,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished and pleasant Chassid* who fears
Hashem, devotes himself to communal needs,
the Rav M. HaKohen,
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your book, the Chelkas Meir* (note 1: The Luminous Portion) and I thank you very much for it (note 2: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 33, at page 235 and volume 24, at page 412). In this matter, I join those who address to you their good wishes, in particular within the committee that has been constituted in your honor. May Hashem cause that, for many years, you make use of the possibilities that exist for the purpose of strengthening traditional Judaism, a Judaism without compromise, so that: "you shall fear no man." If at all times and in all places, this has been the sole and unique path of our Torah*, Torah* of truth, how much more is it the case in this country and in our era of multiple disappointments, when all barriers are called into question, when values are transformed, even more, when evil is presented as good and good as evil, darkness as light and light as darkness. For, the assurance has been given to us (note 3: In tractate Yoma* 38b) that: "one comes to the aid of the one who desires to purify himself." The Admur HaZaken* specifies (note 4: In the Likkutei Torah*, commentaries of Shemini Atzeres*, at page 88b) that this also includes the act of purifying others. With my respects and my blessing,
As is customary in such cases, I reproduce here what I noted, albeit quickly, regarding this book:
At the beginning: The introduction of the Rambam* is the following: "All the Mitzvos* were given with their commentary, as it is said: 'I will give you this Torah*,' the Written Law, 'and this Mitzvah*,' its commentary, the Oral Law." Now, one can raise a question on this matter. Indeed, it is from the Shemittah* that one deduces the fact that the Mitzvos* were given with their commentary, as it is said: "And, Hashem said on Mount Sinai*," as the Toras Kohanim* specifies, at this same reference. Now, this question is all the more strong since the Rambam* himself cites this explanation in his introduction to the commentary of the Mishnah*. But, perhaps it is possible to understand it according to one of the principles of the Rambam* according to which: "one adopts the simplest commentary, to the point of sometimes citing a verse that does not appear in the Gemara*," as the Yad Malachi* says, in his principles of the Rambam*, and one will consult, on this subject, the references that he cites (note 5: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "the references that he cites" and: "new"). This also answers the question that the Tzafnas Paaneach*, of the Gaon of Rogatchov*, poses on the Rambam*. Indeed, the Talmud*, in tractate Berachos* 5a, specifies that "and this Mitzvah*" designates the Mishnah* and "to teach them," the Gemara*. This is quite evident.
Nevertheless, a question still arises. The commentary of the Rambam* teaches only that the Mitzvos* were given with their commentary on Mount Sinai*. On the other hand, from where does one deduce that it is the same for the words of our Sages and from where does one know that the new (note 5) explanations introduced by the Sages were themselves given on Mount Sinai* (note 6: See the references cited by the Sefer HaSichos* 5752, volume 2, at page 504, in note 20)? But, perhaps it is possible to advance that the Rambam* maintains here a position that he has already adopted elsewhere, according to which it is an injunction of the Torah* to conform to all the decrees, to the institutions and to the customs (note 7: Introduced by the Sages), as he specifies at the beginning of his laws of those who rebel. It would follow that the Mitzvos* in question here also include the dispositions of the Sages.
On this matter: This introduction of the Rambam* (note 8: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 16, page 193, at note 9) is stated: "on his commentary of the Mishnah*, in the order Zeraim*." This is indeed the phrase that appears in the various editions of the Talmud*. However, the content of this explanation clearly shows that it is not specific to the order Zeraim*, but applies, equally, to the entirety of the Talmud*.
At the same reference: One finds a discussion to establish whether the descendants of Noach* are obligated to sanctify the Name of Hashem or not (note 9: See also, on this subject, the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 20, page 75, at note 33). The Sefer HaMitzvos*, of the Rambam*, at injunction no. 9, clearly establishes that this is the case and he deduces it from tractate Sanhedrin*. Moreover, the principle thereof is reported in the Sefer HaMitzvos*, at this same reference, subsequently and a proof of this Mitzvah* is drawn from: "I shall be sanctified among the children of Yisrael*," although this had already been specified at the beginning of the Mitzvah*. This indeed means that the obligation defined here applies only to Yisrael*, as is indicated before this. The Rambam* explains that our Sages deduce it from the expression: "among the children of Yisrael*." It is therefore for this reason that they define only seven Mitzvos* of the descendants of Noach*.
At the end: The Marcheshes* specifies that women are exempt from the reading of the Hallel*. It follows that, according to the opinion that considers that the Megillah* is read at night, they should be exempt from it as well. This is the reasoning advanced by the Baal Halachos Gedolos*. In consequence, one may ask why the latter contests the opinion of the Tosafos*, in tractate Sukkah* 38a. According to him, women are not obligated to read the Hallel* on the night of Pesach*. This is not, however, what the Shulchan Aruch* says, which does not mention an opinion contesting this conclusion. And, one will see, on this subject, the Shulchan Aruch* of the Admur HaZaken*, chapter 472, at paragraph 25. I do not, however, have the Marcheshes* available.
