To Mr. Yaakov Cohen,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of the 23rd of Nissan*, which reached me with a little delay. One introduces one's words with a blessing and I would like, first of all, to thank you for the news that you give me of your visit to London. Following up on our conversation, as well as on the content of your letter, one of the educational leaders of Chabad* is Mr. Shmuel Hefer, director of the vocational school and the seminary of Kfar Chabad*. Moreover, the members of his family knew my brother (note 1: The Rav Yisrael Aryeh Leib Schneerson) while still in Russia, then in the Holy Land*, may it be restored and rebuilt. This means that Mr. Hefer is suited, in every respect, to participate in this celebration of the laying of the cornerstone (note 2: As a representative of the Chabad movement).

May Hashem cause, and, of course, this is essential, that the laying of the cornerstone of this Talmud Torah* take place at a good and fruitful time, that it be so according to the Torah*. I mean that within this edifice, children of Yisrael* will be educated in conformity with the instructions of our eternal Torah*, of the holy Torah* which is also a Torah* of life, breathing life into our world. And, the study of the Torah* will lead to action (note 3: See tractate Kiddushin* 40b), to the practice of the Mitzvos* in daily life, the Mitzvos* of the Torah* of which it is said: "One shall live by them." If this has been so at all times and in all places, how much more is it the case in our era and in our generation whose path and life have gone astray, which searches for a truth without compromise, an eternal truth, particularly in the country that all the nations describe as the Holy Land*. With my respects, my blessing for all that has just been said and to give me good news thereof,

ובהמשך לשיחתנו, וכן לתוכן מכתבו זה, הנה אחד מעסקני החינוך החב"דים הוא מר שמואל שי' חפר, מנהל בי"ס מקצועי וסמינר בכפר חב"ד, ואנשי משפחתו הכירו (להבדיל מחל"ח) את אחי ע"ה עוד ברוסיא ולאחרי זה באה"ק ת"ו. זאת אומרת שמתאים מר חפר שי' מכל הנקודות להשתתף בחגיגת הנחת אבן הפינה.

ויהי רצון - וזהו העיקר כמובן - שהנחת אבן הפינה לבנין התלמוד תורה תהי' בשעה טובה ומוצלחת, טובה ומוצלחת על פי תורה, רצוני לומר שבבנין זה יחונכו בני ישראל על פי הוראת תורתנו הנצחית, תורה הקדושה וביחד עם זה תורת חיים, כולל גם החיים בעולמנו הזה, תלמוד תורה המביא לידי מעשה קיום המצוות בחיי היום יום, מצוות התורה עליהן נאמר וחי בהם. שאם בכל התקופות והמקומות הדברים אמורים, על אחת כמה וכמה בתקופתנו זו ובדור זה אשר נבוכים הם בדרכם בחיים וזקוקים לאמת בלתי פשרית, אמת נצחית, ובפרט בארץ אשר בפי כל עמי תבל ארץ הקדש יקרא לה.
