Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8813 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 23 · Letter 137

By the grace of Hashem,

8 Iyar* 5724,

Brooklyn,

I bless you and greet you,

I respond to your letter (note 1: This letter is addressed to a young woman) of this Monday, in which you briefly describe to me what your life has been. It is, I hope, surely unnecessary to emphasize to you the necessity of a daily existence that be in conformity with the teachings of our Torah*, Torah* of life, delivering a lesson for life. This is the sole means of knowing happiness, both spiritually and materially, in the World to Come and in this world. This is the answer to your questions: you must endeavor to continue your studies in this school, to maintain yourself in an environment permeated with the fear of Hashem. If one takes into account the influence of the street, this fear of Hashem must be strong, setting aside the advances and the propositions emanating from the left side (note 2: That of the forces of evil). Among all the schools that you cite, it is certain that the seminary Beis Yaakov* has very broadly the priority over all the others.

It is the same for your second question. You write to me that you are fifteen years old. It is clear that the friendship to which you allude has no reason to be, is in no way desirable, at your age. Not only is it not in conformity with the teaching of our Torah*, Torah* of life, but, moreover, the elementary logic of men establishes that it will have totally undesirable consequences. Without doubt, the weakening of your state of health and your nervous tension result from it, at least in part, or are explained because you think about it. You ask me how you can refuse to maintain this friendship. You will also find the answer in what was said previously. In this case, you yourself are refusing nothing to anyone. You are merely conforming to the injunction of our Torah*, Torah* of life. Moreover, this young man himself, if he is sincerely religious, must do the same (note 3: Abandon this friendship), entrusting himself fully to what the Torah* says. May Hashem cause that you give me good news of all of this. With my blessing,
