Volume 23 · Letter 136

By the grace of Hashem,

7 Iyar* 5724,

Brooklyn,

To the attention of the participants in the study of the holy Tanya*,

in the synagogue Shaarei Tefillah* (note 1: The Gates of Prayer) of Toronto,

may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you,

I learned, with pleasure, that you are completing the study of the third part of the Tanya*, Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, on the Sunday of Parshas Emor*, "say... and you shall say...," the day of Pesach Sheini* (note 2: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 32, at page 227). May Hashem cause that your study of the Torah* be thereby increased, as is the case each time there is a completion, that one finishes a part, especially in public. The vitality and the clarity of this study will be increased as well. Indeed, the assurance of such an addition, on the part of those who take part in such a study, has been clearly signified to us, as indicated by the conclusion of Iggeres HaTeshuvah* previously cited: "When a man sanctifies himself somewhat here below, he is considerably sanctified from above" (note 3: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to tractate Yoma*, at the end of chapter 6").

Moreover, the text brings a clarification on this subject: "as was said previously... from the level of the Light that surrounds the worlds," which means that the heavenly sanctification is considerable not only in its quantitative dimension, but also qualitatively. Moreover, it is without any common measure, as is the Light that surrounds the worlds in relation to that which penetrates them (note 4: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See, in particular, the Tanya*, at chapter 48"). Then, immediately after this, the text adds: "It is strictly the same for the reward." It is quite clear that this applies, in the same way, to the recompense of this Mitzvah*, both in the World to Come and in this world. Indeed, the study of the Torah* is one of the practices (note 5: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Peah*, at the beginning of chapter 1") of which one consumes the fruits in this world while the capital is preserved for the World to Come.

According to the custom that has always been in effect, every event that concerns this week must be linked to its Parshah*. One knows, indeed, the commentary that our Sages make (note 6: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "In tractate Yevamos* 114a") on the verse: "Say... and you shall say..." (note 7: See, on this subject, letter no. 8816), according to which: "This has the purpose of putting the great ones on guard regarding the small ones." Now, just as greatness and smallness exist in the world, in general, they are also found within the small world (note 8: According to the Midrash* Tanchuma*, Parshas Pekudei*, at chapter 3) that constitutes man. Indeed, every man possesses his own greatness and his own smallness. His greatness is the intellect of his brain, the emotion of his heart, whereas his smallness resides in his power of action. It is therefore asked of man that his greatness put on guard his smallness. In conformity with the injunction of our Sages (note 9: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the laws of Torah* study, of the Admur HaZaken*, chapter 4, at paragraphs 3 and 4"), study must be directed toward action and, even more so, "great is the study that leads to action" (note 10: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to tractate Bava Kamma* 17a"), for it is essentially in this way that the study is great (note 11: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "One will consult the laws of Torah* study, of the Admur HaZaken*, chapter 4, at paragraph 3").

To all of this applies the teaching of Pesach Sheini*, according to the explanation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, leader of Yisrael* (note 12: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "In the HaYom Yom*, at the date of the 14th of Iyar*"): "Pesach Sheini* teaches that nothing is ever lost, that one can always repair. Even if one was impure, even if one found oneself on a distant path, even if it was so 'for you,' in a deliberate manner, one can nevertheless repair" — so long as one desires it sincerely. Moreover, one undergoes no limitation in time, unlike the first Pesach* (note 13: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "All the seven days are linked to it, according to the explanation of tractate Pesachim* 95b, which says: 'what is eaten during the six days' and 96b: 'It becomes Chametz* during the seven days.'" The Rebbe* underlines here the word Chametz*), which lasts seven days. Indeed, Teshuvah* is realized immediately, in a single instant (note 14: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Zohar*, volume 1, at page 129a. See tractate Kiddushin* 49b and the beginning of Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, at page 91a, which says that the Mitzvah* of Teshuvah*, according to the Torah*, is only a resolution taken in the heart" to abandon the sin. The Rebbe* underlines here the word Mitzvah*) and "he is pardoned before he has time to move," "so that he be accepted by Hashem, welcomed and cherished before Him" (note 15: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Beginning of the second chapter of Iggeres HaTeshuvah*. See the Rambam*, laws of Teshuvah*, at chapter 7"). With my respects and my blessing,

M. Schneerson,
