Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8810 — Tzedakah
Volume 23 · Letter 134 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu
By the grace of Hashem,
Nissan* 5724,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, the Rav Naphtali (note 1: The Rav N. Josephson, of Tel Aviv),
I greet you and bless you,
I respond to your question (note 2: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 11, at page 317). You ask me the meaning of the term Shechinah*, designating the Divine Presence (note 3: See, on this subject, letter no. 8555), which appears, on numerous occasions, in the words of our Sages. This is particularly well explained in the books of Chassidus* and the Chassidic* discourses, in numerous texts. You will find the references in the indexes appearing, in particular, at the end of the Tanya*, of the Torah Or* and of the Likkutei Torah*. Nevertheless, I will respond here, at least briefly, of course without seeking exhaustiveness, which is impossible in this framework.
Hashem is the summit of perfection, transcending every limit and every constraint. It follows, as the Admur HaZaken* says (note 4: See, in particular, the Torah Or*, Megillas Esther*, at page 99b and the Likkutei Torah*, Shir HaShirim*, at page 8a), that the creation of the worlds is not the essential aspect of the Divinity. Simultaneously, to use the formulation of the Rambam* (note 5: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 27, page 263 and in the references cited at note 26), in his laws of the foundations of the Torah*, "He is the origin of all existence and all those who exist are only by the truth of His Existence." All those who exist have need of Him and, just as a creature cannot truly comprehend the creation from nothingness, it cannot perceive the Divinity either, including in the creation of the world and in the existence of all beings. To use the statement of the philosophers of Yisrael*, "if I comprehended Him, I would be Him."
Certainly, one perceives, one understands that no being creates itself and one must conclude from this that created existence has a source, at the origin of its existence. But, this idea is only an awareness of the existence of the Creator, not a comprehension, even though He is at the origin of creation. The expression of the Rambam*, previously cited, according to which all those who exist have need of Him means that this need is linked not only to the very essence of existence, but also to everything that it implies, to the vitality, to the smallest detail. In all of this, every being has need of Hashem. Nevertheless, according to the Chassidus* (note 6: See, on this subject, letter no. 94), unlike what the Guide for the Perplexed says, Providence applies down to the smallest detail, including the most insignificant, for Hashem willed that it be so. His Will was (note 7: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 29, at page 30 and in the references indicated at note 35) to grant His Providence and His revelation here below, including in what man perceives through his intellect.
As the singer of Yisrael* says (note 8: King David*. Tehillim* 8:4), "when I see Your heavens... Your fingers...," this delivers a teaching to man, in the service of the Creator, "lift your eyes to the heights and see Who created all of this" (note 9: Yeshayahu* 40:26), as Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakai* extensively explains (note 10: See the addenda of the Sefer HaChakirah*, from page 101), commenting on this verse. Such is also the introduction and the foundation of the Sefer HaChakirah* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, grandson and successor of the Admur HaZaken*. Thus, when the Divinity reveals itself here below, to the point of being perceptible to the creatures, one speaks of Shechinah*, a term which designates, etymologically, the One Who resides, Who introduces Himself. And, there is indeed here an essential point, so that there is no reason to distinguish each detail, which may Hashem prevent. Only the created being who reflects can note that he comprehends one aspect but does not grasp the other. Nevertheless, in reality, there are not at all aspects, in the plural, but indeed a unique existence, totally infinite.
And, one can advance the following a fortiori reasoning (note 11: See, on this subject, chapter 51 of the Tanya*): if the soul of a man, although it cannot be segmented into two hundred and forty-eight parts, nor into three hundred and sixty-five or into six hundred and thirteen, is nonetheless perceptible to the eye of man, who distinguishes the vitality of the foot from that of the brain, whereas both are identical, that the soul vivifies the entire body, how much more so is this the case for Hashem Himself, without any comparison being possible in this matter! In consequence, when one says that the Shechinah* resides in the Beis HaMikdash*, there is no limiting sense here, which may Hashem prevent. This only emphasizes that the Presence of Hashem resides, introduces itself in this place, to the point of being perceptible to the physical eye. There, the holy ark did not occupy any space and ten miracles took place there.
As I indicated above, this is only one aspect of the explanation that can be given regarding the Shechinah*. There are very numerous others and, even on this aspect, various other clarifications could be brought, which are found in the books of Chassidus* and in the Chassidic* discourses. I hope that you have a fixed time for the study of the Chassidus*, every day and, in an increased manner, during the Shabbos* which is holy to Hashem. With my respects and my blessing for a kosher and joyous festival of Pesach*,
