Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8793 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 23 · Letter 116 · To: bout de quelques jours
By the grace of Hashem,
28 Adar* 5724,
Brooklyn, New York,
I greet you and bless you,
It is with profound astonishment and even more pain that I read your letter of yesterday, in which you state to me the reasons justifying, so to speak, your opposition to the program of religious education that emanates from certain circles, even taking into account the current situation, when no other circle has the possibility of entering the environment and the place in question. This means that the youth there will be delivered to the opposite education, which is not neutral (note 1: But is indeed anti-religious), as the experience of the recent past has shown.
You say, at the beginning of your letter, that you wish to bring clarifications, but I have not managed to understand what you mean, for these clarifications introduce no new element. All of this has already been written two times, three times, numerous times, in the newspapers of the parties. Moreover, you yourself raised this point during our discussion and, even without these explanations, there would not have been the slightest doubt on this subject. Of course, all the doubts that you advance, as well as those that appear in these newspapers, with all the ways of accentuating them, are in no way comparable to the harm that can result from this for thousands of Jewish children and I am afraid to say tens of thousands.
This harm, as I emphasized during our discussion, concerns not only the young people who receive the education of "the other side," but also the opportunity wasted, in this way, to introduce a religious spirit into places where, without this, one would not even have knowledge of the existence of Tefillin* or of Kashrus*. You yourself and your friends have knowledge of numerous situations like these. More precisely, when one founds religious schools, even with a minimal program, one must enable the installation of couples having a religious way of life, of a Shochet*, of a Mohel*, the building of a Mikveh*.
It very often happens that by dint of discussing such a subject, one forgets the actual question that had been considered. Now, this question arises, above all, in a concrete manner, for, in a few weeks, the registrations will begin, which will continue for several weeks, for the new immigrants arriving each month. This therefore cannot be postponed. Indeed, if these circles prevent the opening of religious schools, which may Hashem prevent, the consequences will be immediately felt, in the neighborhoods of these new immigrants, from which religion will perhaps be totally absent — no Kashrus*, no observance of Shabbos*, no family purity. After a few days, when the young people will attend these so-called neutral schools, but in which one will not see and will not find the slightest trace of religion, one understands well what will result from this.
You will therefore excuse me for telling you that, in such a situation and in such a period, one wonders what is the profound objective of such a circle. Without doubt, such a state of affairs is due to the influence that will result from it during the electoral period. Even if the doubts that you express were well-founded, to the point of being more than a possibility and of counterbalancing the certain benefit that would result from it on the spot, one could also question such a benefit, given the harm caused in this way. And, it is so if one admits that the fears are certainties, whereas in my view, there is no doubt to be had about most of them. It is practically certain that they will not materialize and, if this is nevertheless the case in certain places, there again, one can question the importance of the benefit, in relation to the harm that one can fear.
From the way in which I observe the situation, based on what one can see in various places of our Holy Land*, may it be restored and rebuilt, the real problem, without pretense and without artifice, is the following. On one hand, the little boys and the little girls will be taught, these coming months, the existence of the Supreme King, the Holy One, blessed be He. They will be told of His Torah*, not only in a theoretical manner, but also, and perhaps by necessity, emphasizing the concrete aspect of things. In dozens of neighborhoods, one will be able to observe what a life based on the Torah* and the Mitzvos* is. But, on the other hand, one will also unite with the men of the left, including those who belong to the circle to which you allude, in order to fight, which may Hashem prevent, to prevent thousands of Jewish families from having access to Hashem, to His Torah* and to His Mitzvos*. As I told you during our discussion, the poor person deprived of everything wants to know why one takes from him the bread that would allow him to satisfy his hunger, failing which, whatever the objectives, he will die of hunger, which may Hashem prevent.
One could, certainly, raise the following question. If the situation is as evident as what has just been described, how can there be a doubt about the approach that a religious man must have? But, one can answer this question by considering the order (note 2: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "order" and "after") in which the verse is stated: "Corruption blinds the eyes of the wise and falsifies the words of the righteous." Indeed, "a verse cannot be divested of its simple meaning" (note 3: According to tractate Shabbos* 63a), so that, after (note 2) having been struck with blindness and falsification, such men are still defined as wise and righteous. They are nonetheless blind, which may Hashem prevent. According to an image that is cited by the works of Mussar*, a small sheet of paper, when it is placed in immediate proximity to the eye, obscures and hides the entire world, with everything it contains. To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to say more.
One can, of course, grant extenuating circumstances to the content of your letter. I will refer, first of all, to your remark, at the beginning of this correspondence, according to which you reflected upon my words. I have, however, good hope that this is not the case, for two reasons. First of all, my words were very simple and they did not justify a long reflection. Furthermore, it is not a matter of my words, but indeed of the ordinary conception of an ordinary man, for everyone is bound to adopt this conclusion, except one who has a sheet of paper before him, as was said. The extenuating circumstances are therefore, in this case, the following. It is practically certain that these reflections are not your own, but indeed a reaction emanating from a member of the party to whom you communicated our exchange and who cast doubt, or even protested: how can one question the interests of the party, or even that there be the slightest doubt that one could do so? Moreover, a decision has already been made in this matter and, from that point on, according to the established formula, there is no more room for doubt and for questions. One must only justify the decision that has already been ratified, just as it is said: "I have enacted a law, issued a decree. You have no right to question them."
Before concluding, I will ask you once more to excuse me for the manner in which this letter is formulated, not that I regret it, which may Hashem prevent. In fact, what is said is not at all adapted and far too attenuated, given the gravity of the problem. In fact, my apologies concern the use of unusual expressions in the correspondence that you receive. It is a fact that, when two persons have met only once, one should not use them. In any event, may Hashem cause that with time, it become clear that these words were not useless (note 4: See, on this subject, letters no. 4591 and 8530), that is to say, without effect. May the thousands of Jewish families who all exclaim: "Do not stand idly by the blood of your brother," because one refuses a proper or, at the very least, minimal education to their sons and to their daughters, those who cry out loudly and those who ask for nothing, their need being then all the greater, be protected by this merit!
I remind you of what you said and repeated on many occasions, during our discussion, regarding this problem: "Let them abandon Me, but let them not abandon My Torah*," applying the terms of this statement of our Sages to your party. I am convinced that, if you make such words heard to the party, many will share this view and even those who contest it will be shaken in their conviction. As for you, you will be rewarded, as someone who speaks the truth, all the more so since you currently find yourself in the minority. With my respects and my blessing for a kosher and joyous festival of Pesach*,
Of course, I would be happy to have knowledge of your reaction to all of this, even if, for the moment, you do not agree with everything that has just been said. It is clear also that you have the right to communicate the content of my letter to any person to whom it could be useful, in your view, for what concerns these thousands of Jewish families. In any event, I would be satisfied to be informed of the consequences that all of this will have. And, I cannot refrain from adding yet another remark. Indeed, it is ironic to note that all your arguments for justifying that such persons cannot carry out religious activities are the same as those of the right wing of your party, adopting the same conclusions toward the party itself.
There is also another remark, which could seem superfluous, but I wish to write it as well in order to emphasize even more clearly what has just been said. In my view, it is quite clear that, when these persons will assume the commitments that they will take concerning the direction of the religious school, this will not for all that be the maximum, nor even an average accomplishment. I add further that it is the same for all the public religious schools of the Holy Land*, may it be restored and rebuilt. Their religious level is indeed minimal. Of course, this also includes the Chabad* schools that adhere to the religious and public educational current. And, the independent religious schools also have a similar level, for reasons that, at least in part, do not depend on the direction of these institutions. On the other hand, they are indeed, in part, responsible for it. And, there is no need to say more, so painful and distressing is this.
May Hashem cause that, for this festival of Pesach*, the four sons, in all the houses of the children of Yisrael*, in all circles and in all places, belong to the category of the wise. It is in this way that one will hasten the passage from servitude to deliverance, that one will leave the bitter and dark exile in which the Jews of the United States, of the Holy Land*, may it be restored and rebuilt, and of all the places where they reside find themselves, at the true and complete deliverance. And, according to the conclusion of the Seder* of Pesach*, as befits: "Next year in Yerushalayim*!"
