Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8789 — Chinuch
Volume 23 · Letter 112 · To: dirigeants des jeunes d’Agoudat Israël de New York
By the grace of Hashem,
22 Adar* 5724,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the leaders of the youth of Agudas Yisrael* of New York,
may Hashem grant you long life,
I greet you and bless you,
I received, with pleasure, your letter, in which you announce to me the celebration of the completion of the six orders of the Mishnah*. This will take place at the conclusion of the Shabbos* which approaches, for us and for all of Yisrael*, for good, the Shabbos* Parshas Vayakhel Pekudei* (note 1: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 4, at page 1291). In conformity with the well-known teaching (note 2: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Which is reported in the Kuntres Chicago, from page 5." See the Sefer HaSichos* 5702, at page 27) of the Admur HaZaken*, author of the Tanya* and of the Shulchan Aruch*, every Jew must study, every day, the Parshah* of the week and derive from it a teaching for his daily existence.
It is, indeed, possible to derive numerous teachings, from what has just been said, from these Sidros*, Vayakhel* and Pekudei*, as well as from that whose study begins at the conclusion of Shabbos*, Vayikra*. These evoke the manner in which the Sanctuary* was built (note 3: See also the following letter) in a concrete manner (note 4: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "in a concrete manner," "Aleph*," "Echad*," "Aleph*," "Ches*" and "Daled*"). Now, its raison d'etre is defined, by the verse, in these terms: "I will dwell among you" and our Sages specify (note 5: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "As is underlined, in particular, by the Shnei Luchos HaBris*, at Parshas Terumah*") that "it is not said here 'in this Sanctuary*,' but rather 'among you,' that is to say, in each Jew."
The Sanctuary* establishes peace and it creates a relationship between matter and spirit, at all levels and at every stage. It allows the revelation of the Presence of Hashem in the world, including here below, within matter. Thus, the Almighty dwells in a Sanctuary*, made of gold, silver and bronze, that is to say, of material objects. There, animals are sacrificed, which the children of Yisrael* sanctify by placing them on the altar, so that they be accepted by Hashem. Beforehand, they themselves had brought their offerings to build this Sanctuary*. These had been taken from their gold and from their silver, to which they had brought elevation (note 6: See, on this subject, the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 21, at page 316 and in the references indicated at note 12). All of this was achieved because the soul revealed itself within the body and dominated it, because the divine soul prevailed over the animal soul.
How does one establish such a peace? One must, for this, devote oneself to the Torah*. Indeed, our Sages specify (note 7: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "In tractate Sanhedrin* 99b, as the Likkutei Torah* Mattos, at page 86b explains") that "one who devotes himself to the Torah* for its own name establishes peace in the heavenly palace and in the earthly palace." This is also what the completion of the six orders of the Mishnah* explains, according to which "peace is the vessel containing the blessing for Yisrael*, as it is said: Hashem will bless His people with peace." The introduction, the preparation for all of this is specified by the beginning of this same verse, which is therefore also cited by the Mishnah*: "Hashem grants strength to His people." Indeed, "strength alludes to the Torah*" (note 8: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to tractate Zevachim* 116a"). By virtue of the giving of the Torah* and its study, "the scholars multiply peace in the world," as the conclusion of the six orders of the Gemara* states.
The Torah*, which was the object of this gift, therefore constitutes the strength of Yisrael*, "bold among the nations" (note 9: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to the expression of tractate Beitzah* 25b, which the Maharsha* comments upon"). Jews must, consequently, place this boldness, which they possess naturally, in the service of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, thereby putting into practice the injunction "Do good." In return, the "boldness" of the Torah* will weaken that which applies in the domains of the world, so that one also fulfills the injunction "Turn away from evil." All that has just been said allows one to understand to what extent it is important to study the Torah* and what is accomplished in this way, particularly during the period of "boldness" in the life of man, that is to say, when he is still a young man.
May Hashem cause that this study be in conformity with the teaching of our Sages (note 10: In tractate Kiddushin* 40b), that it lead indeed to action and that it allow one to adopt, in daily life, the behavior that befits, including in the mundane domains and in the weekdays. The books of Mussar* and of Chassidus* specify (note 11: See, on this subject, letters no. 2448 and 7422) what the beginning of the six orders of the Mishnah* alludes to: "From when does one read the Shema* of the evening?" Indeed, the introduction of the Torah* and the teachings of our Sages, in the Mishnah*, specifies that, in the "evening," that is to say, when it is dark in the world, it is a Mitzvah*, for each one, to read the Shema*, to proclaim that "Hashem is our Elokim*, Hashem is One."
The Aleph* (note 4), first letter of Echad* (note 4), one, alludes to the Master of the world (note 12: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "As the Sefer Mitzvos Katan* explains, cited by the Beis Yosef*, Orach Chaim*, at chapter 61"). This Aleph* (note 4) must thus be revealed within the Ches* (note 4), corresponding to the seven heavens and the earth, as well as within the Daled* (note 4), which evokes the four cardinal directions. In this way, one "establishes peace between the Holy One, blessed be He, and His world" (note 13: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to the expression of the Midrash* Shir HaShirim Rabbah*, at chapter 7, paragraph 1"). With my respects and my blessing,
