Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8782 — Tzedakah

Volume 23 · Letter 103 · To: début du traité Meguila ”.

By the grace of Hashem,

11 Adar* 5724,

Brooklyn, New York,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter (note 1: This letter was addressed to several persons. See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 6, at page 375). We find ourselves a few days from Purim*. Moreover, our Sages teach in the Mishnah* (note 2: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "At the beginning of tractate Megillah*"), that "the Megillah* is read on the 11th... the 15th" (note 3: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Eleven, numerical value of the two letters Vav and Hei of the Name of Hashem, whereas the 15 corresponds to the Yud and Hei of this Name. Amalek* wished to separate these letters and, as the Shnei Luchos HaBris* recalls, at Parshas Tetzaveh*, page 329a, Haman* was one of his descendants. See the Targum Sheini* on Megillas Esther* and chapter 13 of tractate Sofrim*. See also the end of the Chassidic* discourse entitled: 'The Megillah* is read,' of 5629," in the Sefer HaMaamarim* 5629, at page 86). Indeed, it is from the 11th of Adar* that the time of Purim* begins (note 4: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "The Gemara* states two opinions, on this matter"). And, one can even think that it is the day (note 5: The Rebbe* underlines the word: "day") itself of this festival (note 6: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "More precise than 'the time.' See the Mateh Menachem*, at chapter 690, which comments on the expression: 'time of the giving of our Torah*'").

May there therefore be accomplished, in each man and each woman, what took place "in those days, at that time," as it is said: "For the Jews, there was light, joy, gladness and glory" in the literal sense of this verse and according to the interpretation that our Sages give it (note 7: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Megillah* 16b"): "Light is the Torah*. Joy is the festival." With my blessing to give me good news, for a joyous Purim* and for actions enabling the dissemination of the Torah*, the Mitzvos* and the luminary of the Torah* (note 8: The teaching of Chassidus*),
