Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8780 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 23 · Letter 101

By the grace of Hashem,

7 Adar* 5724,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the attention of the congregants and, above all, the leaders of

the synagogue: "Those who observe Shabbos*," as well as

the participants in the public Torah* studies,

may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you,

I learned, with pleasure, from the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, the Rav Y. L. Raskin (note 1: Rav Yehudah Leib Raskin, of Casablanca, Morocco. See, regarding him, letter no. 8806) that our holy Torah* is taught publicly, within your synagogue. It is surely unnecessary to explain at length the importance of such public studies, in a synagogue (note 2: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to tractate Berachos* 8a"). Indeed, all this is explained in various texts of our sacred books and, even more precisely, in the letters and holy discourses (note 3: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the collection of letters on Tehillim*") of our masters and chiefs, the chiefs of Yisrael*, whose merit will protect us.

My purpose is therefore only to advise you eagerness, to underscore to you the importance of all this, in conformity with the teaching of our Sages according to which: "one advises eagerness to those who naturally possess this quality." One will therefore endeavor to multiply the number of participants in these studies of the Torah*, of its revealed part and of its profound teaching, which, in our era, has been revealed by Chassidus*. Likewise, it is fitting that all the congregants of the synagogue participate therein (note 4: See letter no. 8770).

All of this can be linked to the beginning and commencement of the Parshah* of this week, Tetzaveh*, "And you, you shall command and they shall take for you olive oil to kindle the perpetual light." The study of the Torah* includes its revealed part and its profound dimension, which is its luminary (note 5: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "As underscored by the Korban HaEdah* on tractate Chagigah*, chapter 1, at the end of paragraph 7"). Now, both appear, by allusion, in the verse that has just been cited, "to kindle the light," "they shall take pure oil." And, our Sages say (note 6: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "In tractate Berachos* 57a") that "he who observes, in his dream, olive oil, can expect to obtain the luminary of the Torah*, as it is said: olive oil." For, the words of the Torah* must be studied permanently, day and night, in the most literal sense as well as in the spiritual dimension of these terms, designating the era of the Temple and the time of exile, regarding which it is said: "He resides among them, within their impurity" (note 7: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "As explained by tractate Yoma* 57a. And, the Zohar*, volume 3, page 155a, speaks of the presence of the Holy Ark, also in the place of impurity").

The verse introduces all of this and our Sages specify it (note 8: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "In the Toras Kohanim*, regarding the verse Emor* 24:2") by underscoring: "perpetual: even in a situation of impurity." And, the light results from it, for all the children of Yisrael*, wherever they reside. One finds an allusion to this in the verse and our Sages specify (note 9: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "In the Midrash Tanchuma*, Buber edition, Parshas Tetzaveh*, at chapter 4") why this light is so necessary. It is, indeed, a matter of illuminating us, "to kindle the perpetual light," so that "Your light be found before me permanently." This is the case precisely for the children of Yisrael*, as the verse indicates and as the Sages specify (note 10: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "In the Pesikta* of Rav Kahana, at Parshas Shekalim*"): "And you, you shall command the children of Yisrael*. Why precisely the children of Yisrael*? Because they proclaimed My sovereignty at the Red Sea."

Since then and still at the present time, we do so twice a day, by reading the Shema Yisrael*, evening and morning. Our Sages explain (note 11: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "In tractate Berachos* 13a"), on this matter, that "one will accept the sovereignty of Hashem. One will proclaim it above, below and in the four directions of heaven." The verse specifies in what manner one can permeate oneself with all of this. To achieve this, it is necessary to be "crushed for the luminary," as the Admur HaZaken* explains (note 12: In the Torah Or*, Parshas Tetzaveh*, at page 81c), author of the Tanya* and of the Shulchan Aruch*. By being "crushed," as it is said: "May my spirit be like dust to all," one attains the "luminary," as it is said: "Open my heart through Your Torah*." It is indeed in this way that one attains the luminary of the Torah* (note 13: See letter no. 8778). With my respects and my blessing that you give me good news of all this,
