Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8777 — Teshuvah
Volume 23 · Letter 98 · To: jeune Ezra Binyamin(1)
By the grace of Hashem,
3 Adar* 5724,
Brooklyn,
To the young man Ezra Binyamin (note 1: E. B. Schochat. See, regarding him, letter no. 8703),
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your previous letters and I saw therein, with pleasure, that you study the Tanya* profoundly and meticulously (note 2: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 23, at page 326). Certainly, persons like us can study each word with the necessary precision only after having acquired a good knowledge of several books and discourses of Chassidus*. As for the numerous questions that you have about Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, you will consult the spiritual guides, teaching Chassidus*, whom you encounter.
You also ask me about the discourse of Parshas Yisro* (note 3: Published in the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 2, from page 887), showing the superiority of the Mitzvos* after the giving of the Torah*, compared to what they were beforehand. You point out that this should not apply to the Mitzvos* for which a specific Injunction (note 4: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "Injunction," "Injunction," "concrete" and "His Mitzvos*") was given before the giving of the Torah*, in conformity with what is set forth in the discourse of Parshas Lech Lecha* (note 5: Published in the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 2, from page 757). And, indeed, even regarding circumcision, the commentary on the Mishnah* (note 6: Of the Rambam*), at the end of chapter 7 of tractate Chullin*, underscores the importance of the giving of the Torah*.
The difference is, briefly, the following. The Mitzvos* that one accomplished, before the giving of the Torah*, were only "fragrances," moral values. Thus, the rods of Yaakov* (note 7: Which he placed before the flock of Lavan in order to take his compensation) retained no holiness afterward. Certainly, an Injunction was given to put these Mitzvos* into practice and to do so precisely in concrete action. In such a case, the holiness indeed remains within the matter, including afterward. It is for this reason that Avraham*, when he administered an oath (note 8: To Eliezer, his servant, who had to hold an object of Mitzvah* in his hand), said: "Please, place your hand under my thigh." Nevertheless, this holiness is only that which a creature can attain here below, that of the source of creatures. Indeed, a decree then stipulated that earthly creatures could not attain elevation. On the other hand, after the giving of the Torah*, this decree was abrogated and "He sanctified us by His Mitzvos*," far beyond the source of creatures, like fragrances compared to the holiness of the Creator. You will find references on this distinction in the previously cited discourses.
