Volume 23 · Letter 93

By the grace of Hashem,

28 Shevat* 5724,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of the 16th of Shevat*, concerning the adoption of a child (note 1: See, on this subject, letter no. 8700). In such a case, nowadays, one endeavors to do everything for the well-being of the child and, for this purpose, one makes him believe that these are his true and natural parents. Consequently, even if one sets aside all the other elements, I do not know to what extent one can avoid being alone with the child, kissing him and embracing him, even if he knows that these are adoptive parents and all the more so according to the current custom which consists, as I said, of hiding it from him. One can indeed think that there is here an impossibility (note 2: Of protecting oneself from these Prohibitions). Now, these are indeed, in this matter, Prohibitions clearly pronounced by our Sages and even, in certain cases, according to the opinion of some Decisors (note 3: See, on this subject, letter no. 8766), Prohibitions of the Torah*. And, as I recalled, this is the case even when one sets aside all the other elements, such as, for example, the origin of the child and his personal status. Taking into account what has just been said, I do not see what can be done, in this matter. Conversely, if it is a matter of dissuading someone from engaging in this process, a lengthy analysis should prove unnecessary.

Although you do not speak of it, I suppose that you have consulted a specialist doctor, on this subject, regarding having children, all the more so since, in recent years, new treatments have been developed, in this matter. May Hashem cause that you give me good news of all this. At a favorable moment, your name will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, so that the wish of your heart be positively fulfilled. It would be good to have your Tefillin* checked and the Mezuzos* of your home, to ensure that they are all valid, in conformity with the Halachah*. And, your wife will adopt the positive custom of Jewish women, consisting of giving Tzedakah* before lighting the candles, on the eve of Shabbos* and festivals. With my blessing to give me good news of all this,

For the Rebbe* Shlita*,

the secretary,
