Volume 23 · Letter 91

By the grace of Hashem,

26 Shevat* 5724,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the attention of the congregants and, above all, the leaders

of the synagogue Poalei Agudas Yisrael*, in Kiryat Shalom,

near Tel Aviv, in our Holy Land, may it be

restored and rebuilt, very soon and in our days, by our

righteous Moshiach*, may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you,

I received, in their time, your greetings (note 1: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 11, at page 317), through the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and has good conduct, the Rav Ch. N. Kowalski (note 2: Rav Chaim Nachman Kowalski, of the Holy Land) and I also learned of your reading of Tehillim*. Without doubt, it is unnecessary to explain at length the importance of reading Tehillim* and of teaching the Torah* publicly, in a synagogue (note 3: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to tractate Berachos* 8a"). Indeed, all this is explained by various texts of our sacred books and, even more precisely, in the letters and holy discourses (note 4: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the collection of letters on Tehillim*") of our masters and chiefs, the chiefs of Yisrael*.

My purpose is therefore only to advise you eagerness, to underscore to you the importance of all this, in conformity with the teaching of our Sages (note 5: In tractate Makkos* 23a) according to which: "one advises eagerness to those who naturally possess this quality." One will therefore endeavor to multiply the number of participants in these studies of the Torah*, of its revealed part and of its profound teaching, which, in our era, has been revealed by Chassidus*. Likewise, it is fitting that all the congregants of the synagogue participate in the reading of Tehillim*.

The daily reading of Tehillim*, after the morning prayer, according to their monthly division, then that of the five books, corresponding (note 6: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "As indicated by the Yehi Ratzon paragraph which is recited after the reading of Tehillim*. One will also consult tractate Kiddushin* 30a and the Chassidic* discourse entitled: 'It is for this that they were called,' of 5699") to the five books of the Torah*, during the holy Shabbos* which blesses the month (note 7: The one preceding Rosh Chodesh*), in the morning, before the prayer, can be linked to the Parshah* of this week, Parshas Terumah*, "a levy for Hashem" for the construction of the Sanctuary and of the Temple, which is also a Sanctuary (note 8: According to the beginning of tractate Eruvin*). Our Sages define it as a place of prayer. Moreover, all (note 9: The Rebbe* underlines the word: "all") prayers are directed toward the Holy of Holies (note 10: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, at the beginning of chapter 94"). And the location of the Holy Ark evokes the study of the Torah* (note 11: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Midrash* Shir HaShirim Rabbah*, chapter 5, at paragraph 15, which says: 'on two Tablets of stone: between the Commandments, the passages and indications of the Torah* are inscribed therein'"). Furthermore, the book of Tehillim* is the prayer of the Torah* (note 12: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See tractates Berachos* 3b and Pesachim* 117a"). With my respects and my blessing to give me good news of all this,
