Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8768 — Faith & Bitachon

By the grace of Hashem,

23 Shevat* 5724,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the members of the Talmudic* association of the holy

community Sheeris Yisrael*, in the city of Baltimore,

may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you,

I learned with pleasure (note 1: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 8, at page 269) from your rabbi, the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of multiple knowledge, the Rav M. M. HaKohen (note 2: Rav Menachem Mendel Feldman), that you are preparing for the celebration of the conclusion of tractate Nedarim*, which will take place in the week of the 7th of Adar*, the date on which Moshe* our master was born (note 3: According to tractate Megillah* 13b), the savior of Yisrael*. It is he who received the Torah* on Mount Sinai*, who transmitted it (note 4: According to tractate Avos*, at the beginning of chapter 1) and who is at the origin of the numerous disciples formed in all generations. Before Mount Sinai*, there were then "he who is here and he who is not here," as our Sages specify (note 5: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "In tractate Shabbos* 146a"). But, Moshe* remains the faithful shepherd. He stands between Hashem and us, connects, specifies, explains (note 6: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the commentary of the Ramban* on the verse Shemos* 20:7 and the Guide for the Perplexed, volume 2, at chapter 33") the Word of Hashem to the children of Yisrael*.

Near Mount Sinai*, each one took the oath (note 7: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "took the oath," "in evidence," "you become perverted" and "who are clearly defined") to put into practice the Torah* and its Mitzvos*. And, this oath (note 8: See, on this subject, letter no. 9005) is also a force instilled by Hashem in order to put these Commandments into practice, as the beginning of tractate Nedarim* explains (note 9: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "At page 8a"), according to which someone who takes the oath to accomplish the Mitzvah* acquires, in this way, eagerness. All the more so is this the case when the oath is made before the One Who gives the Torah* and Who creates man. Certainly, one could ask the following question: if he who took the oath before Mount Sinai* does not draw from it the strength to wage war against the evil inclination and to vanquish it, what will his own oath bring him, for the practice of the Mitzvah*?

One can answer this question based on the words of our Sages, found at the end of this tractate. If someone transgresses a Prohibition because he did not succeed in vanquishing his evil inclination and he passed over the Will of the Creator, he must nevertheless hide himself, so that his disgrace does not appear in evidence, for sometimes (note 10: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See tractate Berachos* 28b and the Tanya*, at chapter 41, page 57a"), the fear of a man of flesh and blood has more effect than the fear of Hashem. The same is therefore true for he who takes the oath to put the Mitzvah* into practice, an oath of the soul inserted into a body of flesh and blood (note 11: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "One will see the commentary of Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra on the verse Tehillim* 119:106, who says: 'I have taken the oath and I will keep my commitment: near Mount Sinai*, it was potential. Henceforth, it is actual'"). How much more so is this the case when this oath is revealed and when it is clearly expressed by the mouth, by the tongue, by the physical lips!

The narrative that concludes this tractate, speaking of a woman, her husband and he with whom she committed adultery, is also linked to what is the subject of our discussion and one finds therein an appropriate allusion, since the revelation of Mount Sinai* (note 12: See, on this subject, tractate Taanis* 26b) sealed the marriage of the Holy One, blessed be He, and His people, Yisrael*. Now, it is said, regarding the Mitzvos* of the Torah*: "you shall do them and you shall not turn aside... because of which you become perverted" (note 13: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "This is impossible for a young woman, for the Halachah* does not retain the opinion of Rabbi Elazar, expressed in tractate Yevamos* 61b. See the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas Shelach*, at page 53c"), which warns against all faults, all sins, all transgressions, which systematically have their origin in the first fault, that of the serpent, who had a relationship with Chavah* (note 14: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See tractate Shabbos* 146a and the Zohar*, volume 1, at page 52b") and defiled her, as various texts explain, both allusively and in detail. It is before Mount Sinai* that this defilement disappeared.

May Hashem cause that each one, within all of Yisrael*, strengthen and intensify his study of the Torah*, which leads to action (note 15: According to tractate Kiddushin* 40b), to the practice of the Mitzvos*, which, moreover, allows one to distinguish what is impure from what is pure or, within this latter category itself, what is holy from what is profane, the will and needs of the soul from the will and needs of the body.

The Torah* was given when an association was realized between them (note 16: Between the soul and the body. The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See tractate Shabbos* 88b and 146a. See the Sefer Erchei HaKinuyim*, at the article 'associates'"). And, these associates (note 17: See, on this subject, the beginning of tractate Bava Basra*), who are, in this way, clearly defined, must accept to build a wall, "with all your heart," "by your two inclinations." Conversely, the thickness of this wall depends on the custom and the nature of the land in which one finds oneself. Indeed, one will be less exposed than another to his evil inclination (note 18: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Tanya*, at chapters 15, 16 and 30"), for he is naturally inclined toward study and, without particular effort on his part, he will not seek pleasure. It will suffice for him not to invest himself in the needs of his body, for which he has a naturally greater attraction. To achieve this, he will remember the Injunction received on Mount Sinai*. At a lower stage, is found he whose evil inclination is burning, who needs moral encouragement and who must therefore take the oath.

But, of this latter, it is also said that: "none of us shall be cast away." In the end, it is certain that he too will achieve Teshuvah* (note 19: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the laws of Torah* study, of the Admur HaZaken*, chapter 4, at the end of paragraph 3"), in conformity with the Halachah* which is decided at the conclusion of this tractate, affirming that: "this woman is permitted." With my respects and my blessing,
