To the members of the benevolence association "those who
observe Shabbos*," may Hashem grant you long life,
I greet you and bless you,
I received, with pleasure, your letter, with what was enclosed therein. You inform me of your annual gathering, which will take place at the conclusion of the Shabbos* bestowing the blessing upon Rosh Chodesh* Adar*. Our Sages teach in the Mishnah* (note 2: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "At the beginning of tractate Shekalim*"), that "on the 1st of Adar*, one announces the necessity of giving the Shekalim* and of proscribing mixed species in the fields." Now, one may wonder about the relationship to be made between these two Precepts. Why announce them conjointly? If one consults the commentaries setting forth the reasons of the Mitzvos* (note 3: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "The Ramban*, explaining the verse Kedoshim* 19:19, the Zohar*, volume 3, page 86b, tractate Chullin*, page 60a, making reference to plants"), one can, without doubt, answer this question in the following manner. The mixing of species, in the field, has the effect of disturbing the laws and phenomena of nature. Now, these are established by the Creator of the world, Who directs it and Who willed that plants and fruit trees be divided into different species.
Consequently, one must first announce the necessity of giving the Shekalim*, which will constitute the new offering, by means of which the sacrifices will be financed. Indeed, the Shekalim* of one year cannot be mixed with those of another year. And, this Mishnah* cites, first of all, the Shekalim* then, only after that, it introduces the mixing of species. In fact, the order in which it is formulated is also an integral part of its teaching (note 4: See, on this subject, letter no. 9027). In this case, one might have thought that one should set forth, beforehand, the prohibition of mixing species. For, it is necessary to make known, as quickly as possible, that such a manner of planting is not permitted. Moreover, this prohibition is in effect throughout the entire year and it applies to each individual, personally.
This is not the case, however, for the Shekalim*. Moreover, one can even fulfill this obligation with delay, since the levy intended to finance the sacrifices is effected by also including therein what will be paid subsequently (note 5: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "As specified by tractate Shekalim*, at the end of chapter 3"). One can, nevertheless, understand why this is so, based on what was set forth above. For the entire world to adopt a favorable behavior, it is first necessary that Jews do so, in all that concerns them. For, everything depends on them and the material existence is only the extension of what takes place in the spiritual dimension (note 6: See the Tanya* at chapter 3).
Thus, after (note 7: The Rebbe* underlines the word: "after") the tribunal has set forth a law of the Torah* and it has delegated emissaries to all the cities of Yisrael*, charged with proclaiming therein that the moment has come to bring the new Shekalim*, since one has seen that those of one year cannot be mixed with those of another year, for all that concerns the sacrifices and the spiritual preoccupations of the world, it followed immediately that the same principle must apply to plants, to plantings and even to the earth itself, though it is mineral. In this way, it is clearly established that the distinction made between the species must be maintained.
The same is also true for the Mitzvah* of benevolence, which is a particularly elevated form of Tzedakah* (note 8: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "As underscored by the Shulchan Aruch*, section Yoreh Deah*, chapter 249, at paragraph 6"). According to the explanation of the Tanya* (note 9: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "At chapters 34 and 37"), this is, by itself, considered as the totality of the sacrifices. And, Jews must, moreover, put it into practice with benevolence (note 10: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "As specified by the Shulchan Aruch*, at the same reference, paragraph 3"). Then, the consequence of the accomplishment of this Mitzvah* is the obtaining of revelation, here below (note 11: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Moreover, the highest spiritual elevation also results from it, according to Iggeres HaKodesh*, at chapter 8"). Man receives, in this way, the satisfaction of all his needs, children, health, material prosperity, bread which is vegetal and the realization, in the most literal sense, of the promise (note 12: In tractate Shabbos* 119a) according to which "you shall tithe in order to become wealthy," that is to say, in order to obtain gold and silver, which are minerals.
In this way, acting "measure for measure" (note 13: According to the Pesikta Rabbasi* on the verse Shemos* 3:6), the King of the world will grant all that has just been said, with benevolence and in abundance (note 14: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "As promised by the Shulchan Aruch*, at this same reference"). With my blessing of success in your action for all that has just been said, in joy and enthusiasm,
M. Schneerson,
