Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8764 — Chinuch

Volume 23 · Letter 85 · To: jeune Yossef

By the grace of Hashem,

Thursday of the Parshah*: "all that Hashem

has said, we will do" (note 1: Yisro* 19:8) 5724,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the young man Yosef,

I greet you and bless you,

I received, with pleasure, the letter in which you explain to me how your Bar Mitzvah* went (note 2: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 6, at page 314). Naturally, you first of all commented on the Torah*, delivered a Chassidic* discourse and you gave Tzedakah*. And, all of this will continue during the holy Shabbos* Parshas Yisro*, which approaches and whose central point is the giving of our Torah*, Torah* of life, then during the beginning of the following week, that of Parshas Mishpatim*. Now, one knows the words of the Admur HaZaken*, author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden part of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed part of the Torah*, according to which Jews must discover, in the Parshah* of the week, teachings that apply to that week.

May Hashem therefore cause that each one keep, permanently before his eyes, one of the great principles that one deduces from these Sidros* and which is the following: the Holy One, blessed be He, says: "The children of Yisrael* are for Me, servants" (note 3: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "The children of Yisrael* are for Me, servants," "your Elokim*" and "from the house of bondage") and not servants of other servants (note 4: Behar* 25:55 according to the interpretation of tractate Kiddushin* 22b). It is for this reason that a Jew does not have the right to say: "I love my master...," which alludes, in this case, to all the contingencies of the world. He must not be among those who, because of their attraction to the pleasures of the world, are the servants, the slaves of their evil inclination and of all that concerns it.

One must remember permanently that: "I am Hashem your Elokim* Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage," in order to be truly free. Now, our Sages underscore (note 5: In tractate Avos*, chapter 6, at Mishnah* 2), "none is free like he who devotes himself to the study of the Torah*," this study leading to action (note 6: According to tractate Kiddushin* 40b), that is to say, to the practice of the Mitzvos*.

The merit of the Tzedakah* will protect you in all that has just been said, with even more power and strength, in attaining elevation in the domain of holiness (note 7: According to tractate Berachos* 28a). I address to you my blessing that your parents derive from you much true satisfaction, a Jewish and Chassidic* satisfaction, as well as to give me good news of all this,
