Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8760 — Tzedakah

Volume 23 · Letter 81 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,

15 Shevat* 5724,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

the Rav Ephraim Eliezer (note 1: Rav E. E. Yalles, of Philadelphia. See, regarding him, letter no. 8288) HaKohen,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of the 13th of Shevat*, as well as the one that preceded it, dated the 5th of Shevat*, with what was enclosed therein. I thank you for having sent me the wonderful words of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose Hilula* was the 10th of Shevat*, which has just passed. I return them to you after having copied them. I was particularly impressed upon seeing, at the end of this development, the statement according to which it is in the four cubits closest to the summit of the mountain that one feels... (note 2: The most difficulty in climbing to reach the summit. See, on this subject, letter no. 8972). As was said during the Chassidic* gathering (note 3: At the conclusion of Shabbos* Parshas Beshalach*, 11 Shevat*), the Halachah* rules that one can effect an acquisition within one's four cubits (note 4: According to tractate Bava Metzia* 10a). All the more so since one can also acquire behind a wall, even though it constitutes a separation, even if it has cracks, in various domains. None of this exists, however, within the four cubits, that is quite evident.

I also remind you of the version of Rava with an Aleph (note 5: A Sage of the Gemara*, who must be distinguished from Rabbah with a Hei) and it seems to me that I clearly mentioned, during the Chassidic* gathering, that this appears in the Yalkut Shimoni* on the verse Melachim* 2, 3, as well as in the commentary of Rabbeinu Chananel* on tractate Pesachim* 117a (note 6: The Tanya*, chapter 7, at page 11b, says: "This is what Rava would do with his students. He would deliver humorous remarks before them and they would laugh." One will consult, on this matter, the collection of commentaries on the Tanya*). And, one may consult the Dikdukei Sofrim* in order to find other references therein. With my blessing for this day of the new year of the trees, for "man is like the tree of the field," in particular when he is a Torah* scholar, according to the statement of tractate Taanis* 7a,
