I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letters of the Tenth of Teves*, may this day soon be transformed into joy and gladness, as well as those that preceded them (note 2: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 11, at page 320). I enclose a copy of the letter that I address to the students of Yeshivah* in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt (note 3: This refers to letter no. 8746). Without a doubt, you will make good use of it, in the manner that is fitting. May Hashem cause that you give me good news of this as well. With my blessing of speedy and complete recovery for your wife and for your children, as well as to give good news of all that concerns you,

You ask me about the colors of the alphabet (note 4: For teaching it to children). You will opt for what most effectively attracts the attention of the students. Indeed, in the Middle Ages, several books were printed, in particular the Reishis Chochmah*, each copy of which had a different color, for esthetics. But if one desires to limit oneself to black, for example to recall the writing of the Sefer Torah*, as the Midrash Shir HaShirim Rabbah* indicates, regarding the verse: "black as a raven," and the Gilyon Maharsha* on the Shulchan Aruch*, Yoreh Deah*, at the beginning of chapter 271, it is, on the contrary, the different (note 5: The Rebbe* underlines the word "different") letters that must have specific colors, in the same way as those of the breastplate (note 6: Worn by the High Priest, each precious stone of which had a different color). You will consult, on this subject, tractate Yoma* 37a.
