Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8745 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 23 · Letter 66

By the grace of Hashem,

17 Teves* 5724,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 30/12, with what was enclosed therein. You speak to me about your son and the circumstances of which he informed you. This is, quite obviously, the greatest misfortune that can occur, from the moment a Jew directs his thought toward a non-Jew, as you write. One must therefore do everything possible to save him from this misfortune. And this obligation is incumbent, above all, upon his parents, all the more so since there is indeed here an eternal misfortune, not only in this world, but also in the world to come. For if parents do everything to protect their children from what is not good in this world, how much more must they do the same for the greatest misfortune of all, affecting both worlds at once.

I do not wish to say more, for this is particularly painful, since such ways of acting give comfort to Hitler, may his name be erased (note 1: See, on this subject, the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 24, at page 376). Indeed, the latter had as his objective to ensure that there be as few Jews as possible and it is precisely in this way (note 2: Through intermarriage) that one achieves this. One must therefore hope that a proper effort, accompanied by fervent prayer to Hashem, on the part of all those who wish the true good of your son, and above all, of course, the parents and the closest relatives, will be able to protect him and preserve him from the greatest misfortune that he himself wishes to bring about, which Hashem forbid.

May Hashem cause that you announce good news to me, just as you yourself informed me of this immense pain. It would also be necessary to have your Tefillin* checked (note 3: Those of the father), as well as those of your son, and the Mezuzos* of your home, to ensure that they are all valid in conformity with the Halachah*. With my blessing to give me good news of all this,

For the Rebbe* Shlita*,

the secretary,
