Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8742 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 23 · Letter 63
By the grace of Hashem,
15 Teves* 5724,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I respond to your letter of 25/12, in which you speak to me about your son, about his conceptions as he has presented them to you, about the impression this made on you, as well as on your wife. Very often, one can observe that friends can prove to be much more effective than parents, on condition that they pronounce words emanating from their heart and penetrating the heart of the one who hears them, producing their effect there. But, of course, this is in addition to your own words and those of your wife.
In this case, there is also another point, another manner of proceeding. Indeed, according to what you write to me, he is still single. It would therefore be good for him to become engaged with a Jewish young woman who observes the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, who fears Hashem, who firmly maintains this behavior and these opinions. This should happen in a positive manner, without your son feeling that he is being forced. One can think that in such a case, in addition to the influence that this young woman will herself exercise, their union will have a positive effect, allowing him, in particular, to forget the circumstances and the thoughts that are not good.
According to what our holy books say (note 1: See the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, Laws of Tefillin*, chapter 25, at paragraph 5, the Shulchan Aruch* of the Admur HaZaken*, same reference, at paragraph 11, and the Tanya*, at chapter 41, page 56b), the wearing of Tefillin* exercises a specific influence on the brain and the heart, that is to say, on the intellect and the feeling. One must therefore do everything so that your son wears them each weekday, that they be, at least for a few moments, on his head and on his arm. Moreover, these Tefillin* must be checked and valid. In addition, as I said, it would be good, before putting them on, to set aside a few coins for Tzedakah*.
Very often, such thoughts come to someone whose parents, at the time of his birth, did not scrupulously observe the principles of family purity, the status of Niddah*, the examination for the interruption of purity, ritual immersion in a conforming Mikveh*. Indeed, a lack of knowledge of all the details in this domain causes an imperfect practice. It is therefore necessary to verify all of this with a Rav who decides the Halachah*. If this was indeed the case for what concerns you (note 2: If there were indeed lapses), which Hashem forbid, it would then be appropriate to accede to Teshuvah*, to regret what happened, to make a good resolution for the future, that of the most scrupulous observance possible. You must, moreover, endeavor to have this Mitzvah* observed by your friends and by your relatives, or more generally, to have them adopt daily behavior that is fully in conformity with the teachings of our Torah*, Torah* of life, and the practice of its Mitzvos*, of which it is said: "One shall live by them."
At a propitious moment, your son's name will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, in conformity with what you write to me. May Hashem cause that you give me good news of all this. With my blessing,
For the Rebbe* Shlita*,
the secretary,
N. B.: It would be good to have your own Tefillin* checked, you yourself who write to me, as well as the Mezuzos* of your home, to ensure their validity according to the Halachah*. And your wife will adopt the positive custom of the virtuous women of Yisrael*, which consists of setting aside Tzedakah* before lighting the candles, on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals (note 3: See letter no. 8739). My secretariat does not write in French and this is the reason my response is given to you in the Holy Tongue. However, you may write to me in French, for I read this language.
