Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8741 — Community
Volume 23 · Letter 62 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
19 Teves* 5724,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of
multiple accomplishments and good conduct,
the Rav Nissan (note 1: Rav N. Telushkin, of Brooklyn. See, regarding him, letters no. 8656 and 8823),
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your book announcing good news, the publication of the third edition of your book Taharas Mayim* (note 2: "Purity of Water," devoted to the laws of the ritual bath. See, on this subject, letter no. 8823). May Hashem cause that its printing be completed at a good and fruitful moment and that He confer upon you the success of disseminating the respect for the purity of the daughters of Yisrael*, the purity of water, and "there is no water but the Torah*" (note 4: According to tractate Bava Kama* 17a), according to the teaching of our Torah*, Torah* of life.
Such is precisely the teaching of the days of Chanukah*, which we have just experienced. Indeed, the widespread custom adopted in all Jewish communities (note 5: According to the Rama*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 671, at paragraph 2) requires that one accomplish this Mitzvah* in the best way possible (note 6: By lighting the candles of the festival for each person and in increasing order, from one evening to the next). And, in the same way, the Decisors say that one systematically proceeds in the best way possible regarding a ritual bath, in order to fulfill one's obligation according to all the opinions formulated by our Sages*. For if this teaching was stated for all places and in all eras, how much more does it concern the generation of the heel of Moshiach*, the end of the exile, regarding which it has been said (note 7: At the end of tractate Sotah*): "purity leads to... the coming of the prophet Eliyahu*, whose memory is for good," and who is the herald of the deliverance, that is to say, of the fulfillment of the promise according to which: "I will sprinkle upon you pure waters and you will be purified." Indeed, the Holy One blessed be He acts "measure for measure" (note 8: In the manner in which one acts toward Him, according to the Pesikta Zutra*, regarding the verse Shemos* 3, 6) and "just as the Mikveh* purifies, the Holy One blessed be He does the same for Yisrael*" (note 9: According to tractate Yoma* 85b), during the true and complete deliverance, by our righteous Moshiach*. With my respects and my blessing of success in what has just been said, for long days and good years,
