By the grace of Hashem,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of the Tenth of Teves*, a day that will soon be transformed into gladness and joy. You briefly describe what your life has been and you conclude by speaking of your engagement. In this matter, it is essential to verify that the young woman corresponds to the description of the verse: "It is the woman who fears Hashem who is worthy of praise," without taking into account signs, allusions, such as those you mention.

But, the essential point is that the channel and receptacle allowing one to receive the blessing of Hashem is daily behavior in conformity with the teachings of our Torah*, Torah* of life, and the practice of its Mitzvos*, of which it is said: "One shall live by them." An addition in this matter increases the blessings of Hashem. Indeed, in the domain of good and holiness, there is always room to add, since one is linked to the Holy One blessed be He, Who is Himself infinite.

במענה למכתבו מעשרה בטבת - יהפך בקרוב לששון ולשמחה - בו כותב ראשי פרקים מדברי ימי חייו, ומסיים בנוגע לשידוך וכו'.

ובכלל בעניני שידוכים צריכים לדייק בהעיקר שתהי' מתאימה למה שכתוב אשה יראת ה' היא תתהלל, ואין לנו עסק בסימנים ורמזים וכו' כאותן שכותבם.

אלא ועיקר הצנור והכלי לקבלת ברכת השם היא הנהגה בחיי היום יומים מתאימה להוראות תורתנו תורת חיים ובקיום מצותי' עליהם נאמר וחי בהם, והוספה בזה, מוסיפה בברכת השם, והרי בעניני טוב וקדושה ככל שלא יהי' המצב גם טוב בזה תמיד יש מקום להוסיף, כיון שקשורים בהקב"ה שהוא אין סופי.

ומהנכון אשר יבדקו את התפילין שלו - אם לא נעשה כזה במשך שנים עשר חדש האחרונים - ובכל יום חול קודם הנחתם להפריש פרוטות אחדות לצדקה, וכן אשר ישמור על התקנה דאמירת השיעור תהלים חדשי - כמו שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש - בכל יום אחר תפלת הבקר.
