Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8738 — Tzedakah
Volume 23 · Letter 59
By the grace of Hashem,
Tenth of Teves* 5724, may this day soon be
transformed into joy and gladness,
Brooklyn, New York,
I bless you and greet you,
A) I respond to the letter that you addressed to me (note 1: This letter is addressed to a woman). For various reasons, the response has been delayed until now. You inform me of the feelings of your heart, concerning the young man who has been proposed to you, the elements that favor an agreement, and those that tend toward a refusal. Nevertheless, one point is not perfectly clear in your letter: are the feelings you describe stable, or can they be qualified as passing? One of the criteria (note 2: See, on this subject, letters no. 3941 and 5085) for determining this is the following: when you stop meeting this young man, what effect does this have on you? This will allow you to analyze the situation and the feeling of your heart in a more objective manner.
If, during the period when you were separated from each other, you nonetheless corresponded frequently, you can now interrupt all contact, in the appropriate manner, including in writing, and you will see what results from it. If the relationship is stable, on both sides, for yourself and for this young man, you will be able to explain to him what he must correct, the reasons that tend toward refusal, for example his current (note 3: The Rebbe* underlines the word: "current") attitude toward the study of the Torah*, with enthusiasm and ardor. Without a doubt, he himself will be able to verify, after a few weeks, whether he is able to adopt such a way of life.
B) Regarding the opposition on the part of such persons (note 4: To this union, perhaps on the part of the parents), if the criteria and the consequences, in light of what has just been said, show a clearly positive outcome, it is clear that this opposition will disappear of its own accord. You can also ask friends to speak to them and explain the situation. Hashem grants His Providence to each one. He will therefore guide you, in a positive manner, in this fundamental event for you and in all that concerns you. With my blessing to give me good news,
