Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8737 — Chinuch

Volume 23 · Letter 58

By the grace of Hashem,

9 Teves* 5724,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*, 28 Kislev*. It seems to me that I already wrote to you, in my previous letter, that I do not know the details of the matter reported to me and that you yourself mention in your letter. There is no reason for me to intervene, in this matter, being at a distance, all the more so since this concerns, in this case, the holy city of Yerushalayim*, in which there are numerous Rabbanim*. The purpose of this letter is therefore the following: it is absolutely inconceivable to complain to anyone (note 1: And therefore, in this case, to the Rebbe* himself) before summoning the person concerned before a Rav or before a rabbinical tribunal, in the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, and better yet, in the holy city of Yerushalayim* itself. There, you will present your arguments and you will be given the opinion of the Torah*. If the other party refuses to appear before the Rav, he will deliver to you, in conformity with the established usage, a certificate of refusal against this person and he will specify to you whether it is permitted to appear before another instance. For all Jews, indeed, in particular for Chassidim*, basing their education on the Chassidic* ways, according to the teachings of our masters and chiefs, our holy Torah* is a Torah* of life, a teaching for daily life, down to its smallest detail, in relations with Hashem as in those between men. On the other hand, no one can take justice into his own hands. On the contrary, if you are convinced that you are in the right, you must be even more scrupulous in this matter, this is quite evident. For our holy (note 2: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "holy," "life," "wisdom," "My Statutes," and "exert your efforts") Torah* is also a Torah* of life, of true life.

You wrote your letter during the days of Chanukah*. Now, the war of the Greeks (note 3: See, on this subject, letter no. 8723) was not directed against the wisdom of the Torah*. In fact, its purpose was "to make them forget Your Torah*," the holy Torah* of Hashem. And it is the same for the Mitzvos*, since the aim was to make them transgress "the Statutes of the Will" (note 4: The Greeks rejected the submissive attitude, but not the intellectual adherence). Then, the children of Yisrael* gave their lives for this, without constructing rational arguments. And, in fact, their reaction was crowned with success and what resulted from it (note 5: The festival of Chanukah*) was established for all generations. There is therefore indeed here a teaching that is delivered to each one, within all of Yisrael*. According to the words of the verse, "if you walk in My Statutes," and our Sages* explain (note 6: According to the commentary of Rashi* and the Toras Kohanim* on this verse): "by exerting your efforts on the Torah*," it is precisely in this way that: "I will give your rains in their season," that a man obtains the blessing of Hashem in all his needs, from His full, open, holy, and broad hand.

Given the importance of peace, this letter is sent to you by express mail. At a propitious moment, your name will be mentioned (note 7: Presumably near the resting place of the previous Rebbe*) so that the wishes of your heart be positively fulfilled, in all the points that you mention in your letter, and above all, so that you find a match that is good for you, down to the smallest detail. With my blessing to give me good news of all this,

M. Schneerson,
