By the grace of Hashem,

Zos Chanukah* (note 1: Last day of the festival) 5724,

Brooklyn, New York,

I greet you and bless you,

A rumor has reached me according to which some have adopted the custom, in your holy community, during public celebrations, in the presence of men and women, in particular before a wedding ceremony and then during the meal that follows it, of having a woman sing. It may concern the blessings recited on this occasion or other blessings, but in any case, there is indeed here a woman's singing. You will understand the astonishment and surprise that this information aroused in me. One knows, indeed, the words of our Sages*, at various references, in particular at the beginning of the Talmud, in tractate Berachos* 24a, and in the writings of the Decisors, totally and completely excluding such a practice. I am all the more surprised since I know the value accorded to the holy Zohar* by our brothers, the Sephardic* children of Yisrael*. Now, this work, at Parshas Naso*, in its holiest part, the Idra*, at page 142a, clearly underscores to what degree such a manner of acting must be rejected.

Now, if this is so in every place and in every situation, how much more is this the case for what is public, on the occasion of the marriage of a son and daughter of Yisrael*. Indeed, our Sages* underscore (note 2: In tractate Sotah* 17a), in particular, that: "when a man and a woman have the merit, the Divine Presence* installs itself between them." At the beginning of the process and at its foundation, during the marriage, is decided what the eternal edifice that is thus being built will be. The blessings recited in this regard therefore state, first of all, that: "He created everything for His honor" (note 3: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the commentary of Rashi* on tractate Kesubos* 8a which says: such a gathering is for the honor of Hashem"). Subsequently, one addresses still many blessings to the bride and groom and one states that: "joy reigns in His dwelling" (note 4: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to the Bach*, Even HaEzer*, chapter 62, at paragraph 11, one cannot say that joy reigns when authority is given to the evil inclination. One will also see the Sdei Chemed*, of Rav Chizkiyah Medini*, compendium of laws, at the article: 'the grooms', at the end of paragraph 12"), namely that of Hashem, blessed be He.

It is therefore absolutely certain that a great purity, an increased holiness are then necessary, to the point of conforming to the image chosen by the members of the great assembly, in the formulation they retained for these blessings: "as You rejoiced during Your creation, in Gan Eden* previously," that is to say, before the original sin. Moreover, this moment is solely that of mercy, of blessing, and of goodness. Besides the intrinsic condemnation of this practice, there is also added, according to the statement of the holy Idra Rabbah*, the fact that it arouses heavenly severity and, moreover, that this severity spreads through two hundred and forty-eight paths. Furthermore, the beginning of the quarrel (note 5: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Which is the severity of man, according to tractate Kiddushin* 40b") against man is indeed a feminine voice. And, as our Sages* say, at this same reference, "it has been taught that the severity of Hashem spreads through two hundred and forty-eight paths. Here is what was taught: the voice..., the hair..." You will consult this text.

We have just lived through the days of Chanukah*. Now, according to the words of our great master, the Rambam*, at the beginning of his laws of Chanukah*, the Jews were then persecuted and their daughters were attacked. The children of Yisrael* then gave of their own persons. They carried the victory, established days of joy and thanksgiving, from then until the end of generations. In fact, when all the festivals will be annulled, the days of Chanukah* will still endure (note 6: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to the Midrashim* of our Sages*, cited, in particular, in the Sefer HaChaim*, volume 3, at chapter 7. One will also see the commentary of the Ramban*, at the beginning of Parshas Behaalosecha*, which says: 'the immutable character of the Menorah* alludes to the lights of Chanukah*'"). I have good hope that the same will apply to what has just been said, that all of this will be fully repaired, and that the women of your holy community will themselves take part in this repair. In this regard, you will consult the commentary of Rashi* on tractate Shabbos* 23a, which says: "the miracle (note 7: Of Chanukah*) occurred through the intermediary of a woman." In this way, these celebrations of Mitzvah* will fully conform to the statement of our Sages* (note 8: In tractate Sanhedrin* 39a) according to which the Divine Presence* is revealed when ten Jews gather. All the more so when there are several tens. And may it therefore be fulfilled: "joy is in His dwelling," that of the King of the world, Who blesses, dispenses multiple blessings to each one, from His full, open, holy, and broad hand. With my respects, greeting the leaders of your holy community and, above all, the Rabbanim*, to whom Hashem will grant long days and good years, as well as with my blessing to give me good news of all this,
