Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8733 — Tzedakah

By the grace of Hashem,

To the young Ephraim Fishel HaKohen,

I greet you and bless you,

After a particularly long interruption, I have duly received your letter and your request for a blessing, with what was enclosed therein. I am surprised that you say nothing to me about your actions and your accomplishments. At the very least, I hope that you indeed have a fixed time for the study of our holy Torah*, of its revealed part and also of Chassidus*. I also hope that, in conformity with the teaching of our Sages* (note 1: In tractate Kiddushin* 40b), this study leads to action and that you strengthen yourself in the practice of the Mitzvos*. This is, above all, an obligation imposed upon us by the Holy One blessed be He, but it is also the means of obtaining the blessing.

We have recently experienced the date of the good tidings, the deliverance of the 19th of Kislev*, and we are still in the days of Chanukah*, luminous days, indeed days in which one increases this light from day to day (note 2: By the number of candles that are lit), and a teaching is thus delivered, by way of allusion, for the entire year, regarding: "the candle (which) is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* (which) is a light." With my blessing to give me good news of all this,

שלום וברכה!

לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך נתקבל מכתבו פ"נ עם המצורף אליו,

ולפלא שאינו כותב מאומה ממעשיו ופעולותיו וכו', ועכ"פ התקוה - שיש לו קביעות עתים בלימוד תורתנו הק' נגלה וגם חסידות, וכהוראת חז"ל - שהלימוד מביא לידי מעשה התחזקות בקיום המצות, ונוסף על העיקר שכן הוא ציווי הקב"ה, הרי זה גם הדרך לקבלת הברכה.

והרי זה לא כבר באנו מיום בשורה וגאולה י"ט כסלו ונמצאים בימי חנוכה, ימי אור, ועוד - שמוסיפים באור מיום ליום, והרמז ללמוד מזה על כל השנה בנוגע לנר מצוה ותורה אור.
