Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8732 — Grief & Loss

Volume 23 · Letter 53

By the grace of Hashem,

1st day of Rosh Chodesh* Teves* 5724,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

A rumor, which seems strange, has reached me, according to which peace does not reign among the Shochatim* who are in your city (note 1: See the beginning of the preceding letter). And this is all the more surprising and painful since these Shochatim* are Chassidim*. If, which Hashem forbid, this rumor is founded, without considering here the reason for this lack of peace and the validity of the arguments that one opposes to the other, it is quite evident that it is necessary, before all else, to bring the hearts closer, to obtain much more than a simple proximity. Indeed, the love of one's fellow is a great principle of the Torah* and you will consult the marvelous explanations developed on this subject, as well as the frightful words concerning its absence, in the Kuntres Heichaltzu* of the Admur HaZaken*, this year being the one hundred and fiftieth since his passing Hilula*, in the Likkutei Torah*, at Parshas Matos*, in the Mitzvah* of Ahavas Yisrael* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, in his Sefer HaMitzvos*, in the Kuntres Heichaltzu* of the Rebbe Rashab*, and in the addendum of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us. And there is no need to say more, so clear and evident is this.

As for what is the object of the dispute, both parties will be able to put their arguments in writing and address them to the Rabbanim* of the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, who formed this team of Shochatim*, or to the local rabbinical tribunal, asking them to formulate the opinion of the Torah* on the question. May Hashem cause that these written words, although quantitatively brief, immediately produce their effect and that peace reign in your city. Moreover, in conformity with the prayer and the hope of the children of Yisrael*, "the scholars of the Torah* multiply (note 2: The Rebbe* underlines the word: "multiply") peace" (note 3: According to the conclusion of tractate Berachos*). It is, moreover, in this way that the blessing of Hashem will be multiplied. For the receptacle containing it is peace, as our Sages* affirm in their Mishnah* (note 4: At the end of tractate Uktzin*).

We are at the conclusion of the month of deliverance, that of the Admur HaZaken* which is also ours, the freedom of our souls. Indeed, the one whose liberation we celebrate himself underscored (note 5: See the Igros Kodesh* of the Admur HaZaken*, volume 1, letters no. 38 and 39) that it was announced to him while he was reading the verse: "He has liberated my soul in peace." Awaiting your good news,
