Volume 23 · Letter 47

By the grace of Hashem,

29 Kislev* 5724,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of the 25th of Kislev*, first light of Chanukah*. At a propitious moment, your name will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, so that the wishes of your heart be positively fulfilled. I have good hope that you have a fixed time for the study of the revealed part of the Torah* and of Chassidus*, every day and, more broadly, during the Shabbos* which is holy for Hashem. This is also the means to receive the blessing of Hashem, in your needs, to ensure that your actions be fruitful, in a natural manner, in conformity with the verse: "And Hashem your Elokim* will bless you in all that you do."

It would be good to have your Tefillin* checked, if this has not been done during the past twelve months. Moreover, you surely keep the three well-known studies that bear on the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*. With my blessing to give me good news of all this,

For the Rebbe* Shlita*,

the secretary,

N. B.: It is surprising that you do not observe and do not take into consideration, it seems, the evident contradiction in your letter. Indeed, a summary reflection suffices to see therein the power of "the other side" (note 1: That of evil) and the advances of the "old and foolish king" (note 2: The evil inclination). I am alluding to the beginning of your letter, in which you tell me that you had the merit and the success of studying at the holy Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*. Nevertheless, you had to leave it to return to your parents and, as I was saying, you have not the slightest doubt on this subject. Then, in the continuation of your letter, you relate to me what happened to you subsequently. You left the Yeshivah* and you worked for some time. Then, you entered the army and it is quite evident that this in no way helped your parents (note 3: Which was the justification for this young man's departure from the Yeshivah*). It only confirmed your departure from the Yeshivah*. Then, unfortunately, this car accident occurred and, since then, you consult doctors, undergo treatments. Here again, it is clear that this does not help your parents, on the contrary.

Now, after having yourself (note 4: The Rebbe* underlines: "yourself") written all this to me, you do not see the immediate conclusion that should be drawn from it. Not only should one not have left the Yeshivah*, but, moreover, it would have been necessary to study our holy Torah* there with enthusiasm and ardor, to put the Mitzvos* into practice in the best way, to set a good example for one's entire surroundings, in particular for the young men among our brothers, the Sephardic* children of Yisrael*. From then on, not only would all these events not have occurred, but this manner of acting, and it alone, would have been the path, the channel allowing one to obtain the blessing of the One Who gives the Torah* and Who, moreover, provides sustenance to all, with grace, kindness, and mercy (note 5: According to the terms of the blessing after the meal), in the entire world.

Certainly, "it is useless to complain about the past" (note 6: According to tractate Berachos* 54a), but may Hashem cause that at least now, you know this merit and this success among the young men among our brothers, the Sephardic* children of Yisrael* who, for various reasons, are not familiar with the study of the Torah*, except for a short period. Now, whatever these reasons may have been in the past, they no longer apply at the present time. These young men must therefore pursue studies in the higher Yeshivos*, for many years. Your words will emanate from your heart, from within yourself, and in this way, they will penetrate the hearts of those who hear them and produce their effect. In fact, we are living the days of Chanukah*, whose purpose is the multiplication, from day to day, of "the candle (which) is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* (which) is a light." This is quite evident.
